Stripling leads Jackrabbits in Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. - Jason Stripling, a sophomore from Minneota, Minn., went 4-2 in the 20-under division to lead the South Dakota State University wrestling team at the Kaufman/Brand Open Saturday in Omaha, Neb.

Stripling opened competition in the heavyweight 20-under division with a 5-2 decision over Wade Jordan of Dana College. After dropping a match to John Miller of Labbette, Stripling upended Phillip Livers of Luther College by technical fall, 16-0. The sophomore than defeated Jovan Mays of Chadron State by fall in 3 minutes, 46 seconds and Jacob Combs of Iowa Central in a 1-0 decision. Stripling closed out the tournament losing by fall to Chuck Robinson of Carson-Newman.

In open competition, Nate Althoff, a native of Watertown, went 2-2 for the tournament. The junior opened competition defeating Ben Stidman of Iowa, 7-3. Althoff then upended Lon Welsh of Luther College, 8-3, before dropping matches to Gabe Dretsch of Minnesota and Brandon Mason of Oklahoma State. Mason went on to defeat Dretsch for third place at the open.

In all, the Jackrabbits had four wrestlers go 3-2 in competition and three wrestlers record a 2-2 record. SDSU combined for a 30-27 record at the open.

Kaufman-Brand Open results

The Jackrabbits will next be in action when they travel to Las Vegas, Nev. for the Cliff Keen Invitational on Dec. 2. Time has yet to be announced for the two-day tournament.
