Minnesota Notes
December 7, 2005
The #5/6 Golden Gopher wrestling team (5-0-0) opens the home portion of its 2005-06 schedule this weekend. Minnesota hosts No. 7/7 Iowa State (3-1-0) on Friday night at 7 p.m. at Williams Arena. The Golden Gophers face No. 19/14 Nebraska (2-0-0) on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Sports Pavilion.
Friday’s match will be broadcast by Fox Sports North. The Golden Gopher-Iowa State dual will be aired tape-delayed on Saturday at 5 p.m.
Sunday’s dual against Nebraska will aired live on the internet at TheWrestlingMall.com. A subscription is required to view the match. In all, The Wrestling Mall will webcast the home duals against Northwestern, Wisconsin and Indiana.
The Golden Gophers are now 5-0 after a 31-6 rout of Northern Iowa last Friday in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Minnesota won eight of 10 matches to win its 11th straight against the Panthers. After the Golden Gophers fell behind 3-0, Minnesota rattled off six straight wins to take control of the match. Junior heavyweight Cole Konrad had the biggest win with a pin in 2:56 against Tyler Rhodes. Sophomore Mack Reiter and true freshman Dustin Schlatter added wins by technical fall.
The Golden Gophers’ 5-0 start is its best since the 2001-02 squad finished a perfect 19-0-0. Last year’s team got off to a 2-3 start. Minnesota’s five-match winning streak is the longest since the Golden Gophers won its final five matches of the 2003-04 season (2/6-22). Minnesota hasn’t won six in a row since the 2002-03 season.
Minnesota has won its first five dual meets by an average margin of 24.4 points.
Senior heavyweight Cole Konrad is 11-0 on the season and has won 40 of his last 41 matches dating back to last year. Konrad was defeated in the NCAA finals last March by Steve Mocco of Oklahoma State. Konrad avenged the loss with a 4-1 overtime decision against Mocco at the NWCA/Marines All-Star Classic, Nov. 21.
Last year after five matches, the Golden Gophers were a combined 2-8 at 149 and 157 pounds. Minnesota had been outscored 39-6 at the two weights.
This season, Dustin and C.P. Schlatter have combined to go 9-1 and outscore the opposition, 39-3.
