Augies host Northwestern in first dual of the season

The Augustana College wrestling team has its first dual of the season on Thursday, December 8, when the Vikings entertain Northwestern College. The dual is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Elmen Center.
LAST YEAR: Augustana claimed a 37-6 win in last year’s dual with the Red Raiders in Orange City, Iowa.
UP NEXT: Thursday’s dual will be Augustana’s last action for nearly a month. The team will take the rest of December off for the holidays. The team will return to the mat in January in preparation for a key dual at defending Division III national champion Augsburg on January 5.
LAST TIME OUT: The Vikings placed 27 at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational last week in Las Vegas. Augustana scored 27.0 points in the 51-team field. The Vikings were the third-highest Division II school at the meet.
Individually, a highlight for the Vikings was senior Andre VanderVelde defeating No. 2 seed Cassio Pero of Illinois in a second-round match at 141 pounds. VanderVelde won his first two matches before dropping his next two bouts. He just missed placing among the top 8 finishers. Dusty Wilking went 3-2 at 174 pounds. He won a pigtail match before losing in the Round of 32. He then won a pair of wrestlebacks before being eliminated. Nate Buys also went 3-2 at 84 pounds. After losing his first match, Buys won three wrestleback matches. Like VanderVelde, he fell one match short of placing.
