South Dakota State update

BROOKINGS, S.D. -- After a one-week layoff the South Dakota State University wrestling team will open its dual season this weekend with a home match against North Carolina State.

Action begins at 7 p.m. Saturday night at Frost Arena in Brookings.

The Jacks are coming off a strong showing at the Cliff Keen Invitational. Nate Althoff, a junior from Watertown, went 4-2 in competition to lead SDSU in the invite.

In all, the Jackrabbits combined for a 9-16 record in Las Vegas.

North Carolina State finished 25th overall at the Cliff Keen Invite. The Wolfpack were led by redshirt freshman Ryan Goodman, who defeated three ranked opponents to capture fifth place at 197 pounds.

NCSU, which is 2-0 in duals this season, will take on North Dakota State Friday night in Fargo, before traveling to Brookings on Saturday.

SERIES RECORDS: This weekend’s matchup will mark the first meeting for North Carolina State against South Dakota State. The Wolfpack are the only home opponent on the Jackrabbits schedule that SDSU has not faced before.

LAST WEEK:

CLIFF KEEN INVITE recap: Nate Althoff, a junior from Watertown, went 4-2 in competition to lead the South Dakota State University wrestling team at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev., Dec. 2-3.

In action Dec. 3, Althoff bowed out of the tournament falling to Steve Anceravage of Cornell (N.Y.), 6-1. Althoff was coming off an 8-5 decision over Deonte Penn of Edinboro (Pa.) Dec. 2. Penn was the 15th-rated 165-pound wrestler in the nation according to the National Wrestling Coaches Association poll.

On Dec. 2, Althoff bounced back from a first-round loss to defeat Cody Henriksen of Augustana, 6-2. He then pinned Cody Eardley of Western Wyoming in 2 minutes, 16 seconds to advance to the next round. After upending Lex Case of Boise State, 6-3, Althoff closed out the night defeating Penn.

Sophomore Jason Stripling opened competition in the heavyweight division Dec. 2 with a 5-2 decision over Peter Bozynski of the Air Force Academy. After dropping a match to Tyler Shovlin of North Carolina-Greensboro, Stripling upended Dave Campbell of the University of Ohio, 4-2. He finished the invite with a 2-2 record.

Alan Marvin, a freshman from Adrian, Mich., upended Bryce Leonhardt of the University of Wyoming by major decision, 12-2, to finish the tournament 1-2.

Derek Pirner, a native of Elk Point, went 1-2 on the day. The sophomore recorded his lone win defeating Jon Gerhold of Missouri Valley, 4-2.

In all, the Jackrabbits combined for nine wins in Las Vegas.

RETURN TO ACTION: SDSU will open the 2006 portion of its schedule at the Lone Star Duals in Arlington, Texas, Jan. 6. Nineteen collegiate teams are set to wrestle at the dual tournament, including nationally ranked Oklahoma and Wisconsin. Two of the Jacks’ February opponents are sheduled to wrestle at the dual: Northern Colorado and Utah Valley State. South Dakota State will face both the Bears and Wolverines on the road the first week of February.

LONE STAR SCHEDULE: The Jackrabbits will begin competition at the Lone Star Duals on Jan. 7. SDSU will face Central Oklahoma at 10 a.m., and then follow that up with a noon match against Clarion (Pa.).

In afternoon action, South Dakota State will take on Cal State Fullerton at 4 p.m. The Jacks will close out competition in Texas with an 8 p.m. match against Brown University (R.I.).

JACKS NEXT MATCH AT HOME: When the Jackrabbits’ take on Portland State Jan. 21, it will mark the second consecutive year SDSU will host a home dual in the Intramural building.

SDSU defeated Princeton (N.J.) 18-15 last Dec., in the first varsity athletic event in the facility since January 1973. A crowd of 300, including former Jackrabbit wrestlers, watched the action.

The Jackrabbits defeated Portland State 29-20 last winter at the Oregon Duals.

JACKRABBITS FINISH OPEN SEASON: A total of eight Jackrabbit wrestlers recorded winning records during the open season. Leading the way for the Jacks was junior Nate Althoff, who posted a 13-5 record. Freshman Dan Bonte and Tyler Sorenson both had productive open seasons, with Bonte posting a 10-5 record and Sorenson recording a 10-4 record. Sophomore Jason Stripling finished the open season with a 13-7 record.

A look ahead: The Jackrbbits will have three weeks off before traveling to Arlington, Tex., for the Lone Star Duals on Jan. 6-7. SDSU will then head to Virginia for the Virginia Duals on Jan. 13-14. Last winter, the Jacks captured the American College Division title in Virginia.
