Jackrabbits to duel in Texas

BROOKINGS, S.D. -- After a three-week layoff the South Dakota State University wrestling team will resume action in Arlington,Tex., Saturday at the Lone Star Duals.

Action begins with a 10 a.m. match against Central Oklahoma Saturday morning at South Grand Prairie Warrior Coliseum in Arlington.

The Jacks are coming off a 36-6 loss to North Carolina State Dec. 17. Sophomore Dusty Kavitz and junior Nate Althoff recorded victories against the Wolfpack.

SDSU will duel four teams this weekend: Central Oklahoma, Clarion (Pa.), Cal State Fullerton and Brown University (R.I.). See schedule below

Central Oklahoma, which is ranked fifth in Division II, defeated NAIA Bacone University (Okla.) 43-6 Dec. 10.

Clarion (Pa.) is coming off a 34-6 loss to Drexel University and went 0-3 in competition at the Clarion University Wrestling Duals Dec. 16.

Cal State Fullerton, 0-5 in duals this winter, dropped a pair of matches Tuesday night to Pac 10 opponents Oregon State and Oregon.The Titans opened the night loosing to the Ducks, 19-15. Cal State Fullerton won three matches by decision and one by fall against Oregon. Oregon State used a late rally winning four out of its last five matches to defeat the Titans 22-13.

Brown University (Pa.) last competed at the Las Vegas Invitational on Dec. 3, finishing 47th overall in Vegas.

LAST WEEK:
NORTH CAROLINA STATE 36, SDSU 6

The South Dakota State University wrestling team picked up two individual wins Dec. 17, but fell to North Carolina State 36-6 at Frost Arena in Brookings, S.D.

Dusty Kavitz, a sophomore from Medford, Minn., put the Jacks on the board in the third match of the night, defeating Jalil Dozier. Kavitz used a takedown with 1 minute, 39 seconds remaining in the match to record a 5-4 decision over Dozier.

Nate Althoff, a Watertown native, ended the scoring for the Jacks with a 3-2 decision over Obie Simpson.The junior broke the match open on a takedown with 30 seconds left in the third period to secure a 3-2 decision.

With the loss, SDSU moved to 0-1 on the year, while North Carolina State improved its record to 4-0.

LONE STAR SCHEDULE: The Jackrabbits will begin competition at the Lone Star Duals on Jan. 7. SDSU will face Central Oklahoma at 10 a.m., and then follow that up with a noon match against Clarion (Pa.).

In afternoon action, South Dakota State will take on Cal State Fullerton at 4 p.m. The Jacks will close out competition in Texas with an 8 p.m. match against Brown University (R.I.).

RETURN TO ACTION: SDSU will open the 2006 portion of its schedule this weekend in Texas. Nineteen collegiate teams are set to wrestle at the dual tournament, including nationally ranked Oklahoma and Wisconsin.Two of the Jacks‚ February opponents are scheduled to wrestle at the dual: Northern Colorado and Utah Valley State. South Dakota State will face both the Bears and Wolverines on the road the first week of February.

KAVITZ STARTS STRONG: Dusty Kavitz, a native of Medford, Minn., has produced a 7-6 record on the year.The sophomore is coming off a 5-4 decision over Jalil Dozier of North Carolina State Dec. 17. Kavitz used a takedown in the third period to defeat Dozier. Kavitz was 15-11 as a 141-pound freshman and recorded seven pins on the year.

ALTHOFF CONTINUES WINNING WAYS: Nate Althoff, a junior from Watertown, improved his record to 14-5 on the year with a 3-2 decision over Obie Simpson of North Carolina State.The junior recorded a takedown in the third period to secure a 3-2 decision.

JACKS NEXT MATCH AT HOME: When the Jackrabbits‚ take on Portland State (Ore.) Jan. 21, it will mark the second consecutive year SDSU will host a home dual in the Intramural building.

SDSU defeated Princeton (N.J.) 18-15 last Dec., in the first varsity athletic event in the facility since January 1973. A crowd of 300, including former Jackrabbit wrestlers, watched the action.

The Jackrabbits defeated Portland State 29-20 last winter at the Oregon Duals.

The match against the Vikings will begin a three-dual homestand for the Jacks.

JACKRABBITS FINISH OPEN SEASON: A total of eight Jackrabbit wrestlers recorded winning records during the open season. Leading the way for the Jacks was junior Nate Althoff, who posted a 13-5 record. Freshmen Dan Bonte and Tyler Sorenson both had productive open seasons, with Bonte posting a 10-5 record and Sorenson recording a 10-4 record. Sophomore Jason Stripling finished the open season with a 13-7 record.

A LOOK AHEAD: SDSU will head to Virginia for the Virginia Duals on Jan. 13-14. Last winter, the Jacks captured the American College Division title in Virginia.
