South Dakota State heads to Virginia

BROOKINGS, S.D. -- The South Dakota State University wrestling team will resume action this weekend at the Virginia Duals in Hampton, Va. Pairings will not be determined for the event at the Hampton Coliseum until Thursday afternoon.

The Jacks are coming off a 1-3 record at the Lone Star Duals this past weekend in Grand Prairie, Texas. Sophomore Jason Stripling and junior Nate Althoff both went 3-1 in competition.

SDSU will compete in the American College Division in Virginia. The eight-team bracket will feature: Princeton (N.J.), Franklin & Marshall (Pa.), Duquesne (Pa.), SUNY Brockport (N.Y.), Anderson College (S.C.), Delaware State and Newport News Apprentice School (Va.). The Jacks, 1-4 on the season, won the American College Division in 2005.

LAST WEEK:

Central Oklahoma 29, SDSU 10

The Jackrabbits opened the day falling to Central Oklahoma, 29-10.

Andy Everson put the Jacks on the board in the fourth match of the day defeating Jason Leavitt 10-2. Althoff, a Watertown native, followed that up with a 6-5 decision over Jared Hess.

Levi Krehmeyer closed out the scoring for the Jacks with a 1-0 decision over Kenny Meredith.

SDSU 28, Clarion 15

South Dakota State wrestlers picked up seven wins, including one by forfeit to defeat Clarion (Pa.) 28-15 in second-round action Saturday morning.

Derek Pirner put the Jackrabbits on the board with a pin in 5 minutes, 19 seconds in the 133-pound weight class. Brad Gregory gave the Jacks their first lead by defeating Greg Lewis, 6-5. A Mitchell native, Everson increased the lead to 13-6 by recording a 12-2 victory over Nick Billups.

Althoff would score three more points for the Jacks by defeating Logan Downes, 5-3, and Krehmeyer, a junior from Gillette, Wyo., advanced SDSU’s lead to 19-15, defeating Domnic Ross 5-2.

After a Clarion forfeit at the 197-pound weight class, sophomore Jason Stripling closed out the match with a 5-2 victory over Richard Brooks.

Cal State Fullerton 27, SDSU 9

The Jacks picked up three wins Saturday afternoon, but fell to California State University at Fullerton, 27-9, in third-round action.

Althoff put the Jackrabbits on the board with a 5-3 decision over Bryan Tice in the 165-pound weight class. Travis Gottschalk, a junior from Kimball, Minn., scored three more points for the Jacks by defeating Ryan Budd, 3-0. Stripling ended the scoring for SDSU by recording a 3-0 decision over Matt Methling at heavyweight.

Brown 34, SDSU 6

The Jackrabbits closed out the tournament falling to Brown University (R.I.), 34-6.

Gottschalk put the Jacks on the board in the seventh match of the night defeating Matt Gevlinger, 2-1. Stripling closed out the night upending Levon Mock, 12-6.

South Dakota State went 1-3 in Texas with its lone win coming Saturday afternoon against Clarion (Pa.).

VIRGINIA DUAL SCHEDULE: The Jackrabbits will begin competition at the Virginia Duals on Jan. 13. Weigh-ins will begin at 7 a.m. at Hampton Coliseum. First-round of the American Division will be held at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., with the consolation rounds beginning at 3 and 5 p.m.

Semi-final action will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon, with the consolation semi-finals beginning at 4 p.m. Placement matches begin at 6 p.m., with finals beginning at 8:30 p.m.

CHANGE TO FROST:The South Dakota State University wrestling team's Jan. 21 dual against Portland State (Ore.) has been moved from the Intramural building to Frost Arena.Start time for the match against the Vikings is set for 7 p.m. at Frost.

The Jackrabbits defeated Portland State, 29-20, last winter at the Oregon Duals.The match will begin a three-dual homestand for the Jacks.

2005 VIRGINIA DUALS RECAP: When the Jackrabbits take to the mats this weekend in Virginia they will be looking to capture their second consecutive American Division title.

Last winter the Jacks captured the title, defeating Duquesne 29-12 in the final round of the duals.

SDSU, who went 3-0 in competition at the tournament, defeated Millersville (Pa.) and Davidson (N.C.) on their way to the finals matchup against Duquesne. Both Andy Everson and Nate Althoff went 3-0 in their respective weight divisions for the tournament.

Senior Cody Nehl recorded three straight pins at 197 pounds to go 3-0 in competition.

ALTHOFF STREAK ENDS: Nate Althoff, a Watertown native, saw his four-match win streak come to an end this past weekend. The junior, who went 3-1 in Texas, was upended by Shawn Kitchner of Brown (R.I.) on a two-point takedown. Althoff would end up losing the match to Kitchner, 2-1.

Althoff is 8-2 in his last 10 matches and 17-6 overall.

EVERSON STEPS UP: Andy Everson, a junior from Mitchell, has produced a 6-6 record on the year. The sophomore is coming off a 2-1 record this past weekend. Everson scored a 10-2 major decision over Jason Leavitt of Central Oklahoma and then followed that up by recording another major decision against Clarion’s Nick Billups. Everson ended the duals with a 17-14 loss to Shawn Reilly of Cal State Fullerton.

JACKS ADD WRESTLER: The South Dakota State University wrestling team has added freshman Josh Sundall to the 2005-06 Jackrabbit roster. Sundall, a native of Spirit Lake, Iowa, will compete for the Jacks in the upper weights, after garnering fifth place at the Iowa State tournament his senior season. He recorded 114 wins during his high school career.

HOME SWEET HOME: The Jackrabbits’ opened their eight-match home dual schedule Dec. 17 against North Carolina State. SDSU’s home schedule includes duals against Division I opponents Portland State, Wyoming, North Dakota State, Air Force and American University.

“This is by far the best home schedule we have ever had here. With the addition of the new scoreboards, it will definitely enhance the overall experience of SDSU wrestling for the fans and the athletes,” Liles said.

South Dakota State posted a 5-2-0 record at home last winter.

RECLASSIFICATION GRANTED: The NCAA Membership Subcommittee during the summer of 2004 approved SDSU’s request to fully reclassify its wrestling program to Division I status. Jackrabbit wrestlers will now be eligible to qualify for the NCAA Division I Championships beginning in 2007. This is two years ahead of the original timeline set forth by the NCAA.

SDSU is currently in the second year of a four-year process of reclassifying from NCAA Division II to Division I in all sports.

A LOOK AHEAD: SDSU will come home for a three game homestand to end the month of January. The Jacks will take on Portland State Jan. 21 at Frost Arena. Time is set for 7 p.m.
