January 17, 2006

(Naperville, IL): Former MN high school standout Jason Zastrow (Coon Rapids, MN./ Blaine) helped his North Central College team to victory this past weekend at the 42nd annual North Central College invitational held Friday and Saturday, Jan. 13-14. Zastrow placed 6th in the event, but had reached the semi-finals prior to being temporarily sidelined with an injury.

The NCC Cardinals scored 156.5 points to edge second-place Olivet College (Mich.) with 141.5. Elmhurst College (Ill.) placed third with 129.5. North Central College had 7 wrestlers in the finals and ended up with two 1st place finishers at 125 and 197 pounds.

On the heels of this tournament victory and a recent 20-18 dual meet win over #7 Elmhurst, North Central College (6-0, #8) is making a mid-season surge in the rankings. The Cardinals started season unranked, but catapulted from #23 to #8 in this weekís Division III poll. Volunteer Assistant Coach Andy Schmalzriedt credits first year Head Coach Eric Keller, formerly an Assistant Coach at Wartburg College with the teamís increasing success this season. "Keller is a great leader and motivator and has made a huge impact on the team in his first campaign as head coach."
