Minnesota State's Koons named NCC Co-Wrestler of the Week

Sioux Falls, S.D. -- The office of the North Central Conference has announced that Maverick senior wrestler John Koons (Crosby, Minn.) has been named NCC Co-Wrestler of the Week for his performance at the East Coast Duals last weekend.

Koons, a 184-pounder, did not concede an offensive point in the event, going 4-0 with two major decisions and two technical falls. He opened competition with a 13-0 major decision over Martin Porter of Delaware Valley and followed it up with a 17-0 technical fall over Mike Walsh of Limestone. In the afternoon session, he earned another technical fall, this one a 17-2 domination of Nate Jones of Carson-Newman. His final match of the day was an 11-0 major decision over Chris Gibbs of Carson-Newman to seal the perfect record. Koons, now 18-8 on the season, leads the team with seven wins via technical fall. He also owns a 9-1 record in dual meet competition.

The second-ranked Mavericks also went 4-0 in the competiton to up their season ledger to 9-1. They will be in action again on Friday, Jan. 27, when they host Augustana at the Taylor Center. The North Central Conference match is set for a 7:00 p.m. start.
