South Dakota State Wrestling update

BROOKINGS, S.D. -- The South Dakota State University wrestling team will wrestle three matches in two days to end the month of January. The Jackrabbits will open the weekend Friday taking on the University of Wyoming. Start time for the match against the Cowboys is set for 7 p.m. at Frost Arena. SDSU will follow that with a pair of duals on Saturday, when the Jacks take on Dakota Wesleyan at 4 p.m. and Air Force at 7 p.m.
The Jackrabbits, 4-6 on the season, are coming off a 28-18 victory over Portland State (Ore.) this past weekend. SDSU used three first-period pins to secure the win.
The University of Wyoming is coming off a 1-1 showing at the Cowboy Duals. The Pokes won their first match over Western Wyoming, 33-16, before closing out the tournament falling to Utah Valley State, 26-19. The Cowboys are 3-5 heading into this weekend.
Dakota Wesleyan is coached by former Jackrabbit assistant Josh Hardman. Hardman coached at SDSU from 2002-03 through the 2004-05 season. DWU, 2-11 on the season, is coming off a 13th-place finish at the Red Raider Invitational in Orange City, Iowa on Jan. 21.
The Air Force Academy heads into this weekend fresh off a second-place performance at the Colorado Collegiates. The Falcons, who are 2-2 on the dual season, will battle North Dakota State Friday in Fargo, N.D., before making the trip down to Brookings.
SERIES RECORDS: This weekend’s matchups will mark the seventh meeting for Wyoming against South Dakota State and the second meeting for the Jacks against Dakota Wesleyan. SDSU will also battle the Air Force Academy for the third time in school history. The Jackrabbits wrestled all three schools during the 2004-05 season.
South Dakota State fell to the University of Wyoming, 31-15, last winter in Laramie, Wyo., to remain winless in six tries against the Cowboys. Junior Travis Gottschalk, sophomore Dusty Kavitz and senior Cody Nehl all were victorious for the Jacks.
DWU was upended by the Jackrabbits 28-18 last winter in their first-ever meeting. Nehl, Gottschalk, Chad Herrboldt and Brad Gregory all secured victories.
The Air Force Academy and SDSU squared off last winter with the Falcons upending the Jacks 37-12.Gottschalk, Nehl and Herrboldt made up the scoring for SDSU against the Falcons. Air Force leads the series 2-0.

SDSU 28, Portland state 18
The South Dakota State University wrestling team used three pins in the first four matches Saturday night to defeat Portland State 28-18 at Frost Arena.
Cody Nehl, a senior from Watauga, put the Jacks on the board by pinning Jake Schneider in 2 minutes, 12 seconds. Sophomore Jason Stripling followed that up by making quick work of Steve Fittinger. Stripling pinned Fittinger in 1 minute, 26 seconds.
Marcus Waters gave the Jacks an 18-6 lead in the match recording a pin against Kip Watson at 133. The match marked Waters’ first action since the 2004-05 season.
After a Derek Pirner victory at 141 pounds, senior Chad Herrboldt used a takedown late in the third period to secure a 3-2 decision at 149.
Nate Althoff, a Watertown native, secured the victory for the Jacks by defeating Chris Feist, 13-4, at 165 pounds.
SDSU moved to 4-6 on the year with the victory, while Portland State dropped to 1-13 in dual action.
Waters Comes out Strong: Sophomore Marcus Waters saw his first action of the 2005-06 season this past weekend. In his first match since the 2004-05 season the Leavenworth, Kan., native pinned Kip Watson in 1 minute, 14 seconds at the 133-pound weight class. Waters recorded nine wins last winter as a 125-pounder for the Jacks.
Reminder of Weekend’s schedule: The South Dakota State University wrestling team’s duals against Dakota Wesleyan and the Air Force Academy this weekend are scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 28. Start time for the Dakota Wesleyan is set for 4 p.m., while the Falcons match will follow at 7 p.m. Saturday’s matchup against Air Force will mark Alumni Night for the Jackrabbits.
Pin To Win: South Dakota State secured 18 points this past weekend against Portland State by fall. The Jacks made quick work of the Viking, recording pins in three of the first four matches in the first period. Since the beginning of the 2006 portion of the schedule, the Jackrabbits have pinned a total of 11 opponents. Senior Cody Nehl leads the way for the Jacks having collected three pins in the last five matches.
2006 good to the Jacks: Several Jackrabbits have enjoyed success since the beginning of the 2006 portion of SDSU’s schedule. The Jacks have five wrestles who have recorded four wins in the second half of the schedule, with four of the wrestlers winning five or more matches. Leading the way for the Jackrabbits is junior Andy Everson. Everson is 6-0 during the 2006 portion of the schedule. Senior Cody Nehl and freshman Jason Stripling have added a nice combination in the upper weight classes, going a combined 14-3 during 2006. Sophomore transfer Derek Pirner has gone 5-3, while returning senior Chad Herrboldt has bounced back from an injury to record a 3-1 record in 2006.
Back in Action: Seniors Chad Herrboldt and Cody Nehl recently returned to the Jackrabbit lineup after being injured for most of the year. Both made their presence felt this past weekend with wins against Portland State. Previously, the two seniors went a combined 7-1 at the Virginia Duals. Nehl, a Watauga native, recorded two pins and two decisions in Virginia, while Herrboldt, a Scotland native, picked up three wins, including one by fall.
Jacks Solid In Upper Weights: Jason Stripling and Cody Nehl have made their presence felt in the upper weight classes this season. In the last five matches the two have combined for a 10-0 record and posted five pins. Nehl has posted an 8-3 record on the year, while Stripling leads the Jacks with a 21-9 record.
A Look Ahead: SDSU will hit the road to begin the month of February before coming home for two straight home matches. The Jacks will face Northern Colorado Feb. 2, then travel to Utah to face Utah Valley State on Feb.4 . Both matches are set to begin at 7p.m. MT.
The Jackrabbits return to Frost Arena for matches Feb. 10 against North Dakota State and Feb. 15 versus Northern State.
