Last Week:
The #29 ranked SJU wrestling team lost to #2 ranked Augsburg 9-26 last Wednesday, Jan. 18 in Collegeville. At 157 pounds junior Jacob Malone (28-7) had #5 ranked sophomore Jeremy Anderson (27-0) on his back for the entire first period. However, Malone ended up losing late in the third period 12-10 after giving up two points to break the tie. The Johnnies had three wins in the last three weight brackets. In the 184 pound class, senior Dan Willaert (29-3), ranked #6, defeated senior #4 Brad Tupa (14-3) 8-6 in overtime. SJU’s 197-pounder #5 Dan Fiecke (23-7) won his match in a 4-1 decision against sophomore #8 Wally O'Connor (17-10). At heavyweight, sophomore Jason Finley (19-15) wrestled a close match against sophomore Dylan Soberg but came up with the victory in overtime, 4-2.
The #29 ranked SJU wrestling team went 3-0 at the Central Duals on the campus of Central College in Pella, Iowa on Saturday, Jan. 21. The Johnnies gained revenge against #19 Simpson, Iowa, edging the Storm 19-18. Simpson defeated the Johnnies 19-14 two weekends ago at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa. SJU then defeated Central, Iowa 39-15 and Dubuque, Iowa 40-3. Senior Dan Willaert (#6 ranked; North Mankato, Minn.; 29-3) went 3-0 in Pella including two pins. Senior Dan Fiecke (#5 ranked; Winsted, Minn.; 23-7) went 2-1, falling 10-7 in overtime against Josh Porter of Central College, Iowa.
The Johnnies will compete in and host the North Country Tournament this Saturday, Jan. 28 in Sexton Arena. Wrestling action will begin at 9 a.m.
