South Dakota State update

BROOKINGS, SD -- The South Dakota State University wrestling team will open the month of February on the road with two matches in three days.

The Jacks, fresh off a two-match win streak, will take on the University of Northern Colorado Thursday night at the Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion. Start time for the match against the Bears is set for 7 p.m. MT. SDSU will then travel to Orem, Utah, for a matchup against Utah Valley State. The match with the Wolverines will start at 7 p.m. MT at the Utah Valley State Activities Center.

The Jackrabbits, 6-7 on the season, produced a 2-1 record this past weekend. SDSU opened the weekend falling to the University of Wyoming 26-18 last Friday night. The Jacks bounced back the next day to defeat both Dakota Wesleyan and the Air Force Academy. South Dakota State upended DWU 32-16 Saturday afternoon, winning seven of the 10 matches from the Tigers. The Jackrabbits closed out the weekend defeating the Falcons 25-12 in the nitecap.

The University of Northern Colorado went 1-1 in dual action last weekend in Oregon. The Bears opened with a 30-22 victory over Portland State. UNC ended the weekend dropping a 33-12 setback to Oregon State. The Bears’ matchup with the Jacks will mark the first home dual for UNC this season. Northern Colorado is 4-3 heading into this weekend.

Utah Valley State brings a three-match win streak into this weekend. UVSC used a 24-15 victory over Adams State (Colo.), a team ranked nationally in NCAA Division II, to move 5-8 on the season last weekend. The Wolverines will host their first home dual since Jan. 16, when UVSC fell to Northern Colorado 23-21.

SERIES RECORDS: This weekend’s matchups will mark the 24th meeting for Northern Colorado against South Dakota State and the first meeting for the Jacks against Utah Valley State.

South Dakota State fell to Northern Colorado, 31-12, last winter in Brookings to bring the all-time record against the former North Central Conference school to 18-5. Junior Nate Althoff and seniors Chad Herrboldt and Cody Nehl all were victorious for the Jacks.

LAST WEEK:

Wyoming 26, SDSU 18
The South Dakota State University wrestling team won four matches, including one by forfeit last Friday, but fell to the University of Wyoming 26-18 at Frost Arena.

Derek Pirner, a sophomore from Elk Point, put the Jacks on the board defeating Shay Lawerence 7-3. Pirner used a takedown with 12 seconds left in the third period to secure the victory.

At 149 pounds Brad Gregory pinned Carter Downing after being down 10-0 in the first period. Gregory trailed 16-7 in the third, before ending the match with a pin in 5 minutes, 36 seconds.

After a Travis Gottschalk victory at 174pounds, senior Cody Nehl closed out the scoring for the Jacks, winning by forfeit over Malcolm Havens.

SDSU 32, Dakota Wesleyan 16
The Jackrabbbits won seven matches, including two by forfeit, Saturday afternoon to defeat Dakota Wesleyan 32-16 at Frost Arena.

The Jacks opened the match winning the first six weight classes. After a Brad Gregory victory at 165 pounds, junior Travis Gottschalk defeated Paul Wilson, 11-1. Gottschalk scored six points in the third period to secure the victory.

Cody Nehl, a Watauga native, made quick work of Andrew Schmaltz at 197 pounds, pinning Schmaltz in 1 minute, 45 seconds.

After a Jason Stripling victory at heavyweight, senior Chad Herrboldt closed out the scoring for the Jacks, winning 7-6 over Spencer Novotny. Herrboldt used a riding-time advantage of 4 minutes, 22 seconds to record the win.

SDSU 25, Air Force 12
SDSU won seven matches last Saturday night to defeat Air Force 25-12 at Frost Arena.

Andy Everson put the Jacks on the board at 157 pounds by defeating Zach Lord, 11-8. The junior scored a reversal in the third period and then used a riding time edge of 1 minute, 12 seconds to gain the final point.

Justin Retallic gave the Jacks a 6-0 advantage in the match when he upended Greg Ford 5-3 in overtime. The freshman used a takedown with 14 seconds left in overtime to secure the win.

After a Cody Nehl victory at 197 pounds, sophomore Jason Stripling gave the Jackrabbits a 12-6 advantage over the Falcons by defeating Frank McGrath, 3-1.

Elk Point native Derek Pirner secured the victory for the Jacks by scoring an 8-0 major decision over Shane Manuel. Brad Gregory closed out the night at 149 pounds, defeating Bridger Lane, 5-2.

Gregory Goes Undefeated: Junior Brad Gregory breezed through competition this past weekend, going 3-0 during the three-match homestand. In his Wyoming match, Gregory pinned Carter Downing after being down 10-0 in the first period. Trailing 16-7 in the third, the Glenwood, Iowa ,native ended the match with a pin in 5 minutes, 36 seconds. Against DWU, Gregory recorded three takedowns and used a riding time edge of 1 minute, 38 seconds to secure a 7-3 decision over Thomas Konechne. In his final match of the weekend, Gregory upended Bridger Lane of the Air Force Academy 5-2.

TAKEDOWN TO WIN: The South Dakota State University wrestling team won a total of 18 matches this past weekend. In 11 of the 18 victories, SDSU scored the first takedown of the match. In five of the seven matches won by the Jackrabbits against the Air Force Academy, SDSU recorded the first takedown. Only two times in the three-match homestand did the Jacks have the first takedown in their respective weight class and not go on to win the match.

Retallic Comes Up Big: Freshman Justin Retallic picked up his first Division I dual victory this past weekend. The Atlantic, Iowa, native upended Greg Ford of the Air Force Academy 5-3 in overtime. Retallic secured his first dual win of his young career with a takedown in overtime. Heading into his match with Ford, Retallic’s last action was against Michael Savino of Brown University (R.I.) on Jan. 8.

Streak Starts Trend: In the last four years of the Jason Liles era, the Jackrabbits are a combined 9-5 in their next two matches of competition following a two-match win streak. SDSU went 3-3 last winter following two straight wins, after being shut out following a pair of victories during the 2003-04 season. From 2001 to 2003 the Jacks went 6-0 after completing a two match win streak.

PIN TO WIN: Since the beginning of the 2006 portion of the schedule, the Jackrabbits have pinned a total of 13 opponents. Senior Cody Nehl leads the way for the Jacks having collected four pins during his current eight-match winning streak.

Jacks Raising Level of Performance: Several Jackrabbits have enjoyed success since the beginning of the 2006 portion of SDSU’s schedule. Leading the way for the Jackrabbits is junior Andy Everson, who is 8-1 during the 2006 portion of the schedule. Senior Cody Nehl and freshman Jason Stripling have added a nice combination in the upper weight classes, going a combined 19-4 during 2006. Sophomore transfer Derek Pirner has gone 7-3, while returning senior Chad Herrboldt has bounced back from an injury to record a 4-1 record in 2006.

A Nice Combination: Jason Stripling and Cody Nehl have made their presence felt in the upper weight classes this season. In the last eight matches the two have combined for a 15-1 record and posted six pins. Nehl has posted an 11-3 record on the year, while Stripling leads the Jacks with a 23-10 record.

A Look Ahead: The Jackrabbits will return to Frost Arena for matches Feb. 10 against North Dakota State and Feb. 15 versus Northern State. Start time for both matches is set for 7 p.m.
