Huskies place 8th at NCAA North Regional

The St. Cloud State wrestling team completed its 2005-06 season with an eighth place finish at the NCAA Division II North Regional, which was hosted by the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Host UNO won the meet with 139.5 points, while Augustana was second at 119.0. Mankato was third at 118.5 and Upper Iowa was fourth at 93.5. Moorhead placed fifth at 75.5 and Southwest Minnesota State was sixth at 41.0. Northern State placed seventh at 40.5 and SCSU completed the field with 11.0 points.
SCSU was led by Brent Johnson at 133-pounds, who lost his first round match but came back with a win in the wrestlebacks. He lost his second round wrestleback match, but then came back in the match for fifth place with an 11-7 decision over Logan Hayman of Northern State.
At 149-pounds, Tom Messerli placed sixth at the tournament. He lost his first round match, and then returned in the wrestlebacks with a win and a loss. In the battle for fifth place, Messerli lost by a fall to Cory Schmitz of Upper Iowa.
In the other brackers Nick Wasche (125-pounds), Shad Tappe (141-pounds), Shane Tappe (157-pounds), Tom Anderson (165-pounds), Jason Moore (174-pounds), Neil Russell (184-pounds), and Jairo Sandoval (197-pounds) all posted 0-2 records at the regional.
Of note, the top four wrestlers in each weight division advanced to the 2006 NCAA Division II championships, which will be held on March 10-11 in Findlay, Ohio - on the campus of the University of Findlay.
