Minnesota State rolls to perfect record at East Coast Duals

Shippensburg, Pa. -- The second-ranked Minnesota State wrestling team swept through the competition with ease at the East Coast Duals, hosted by Shippensburg University. The Mavericks compiled a record of 4-0, outscoring their opponents 143-30 in the process, and improved to 9-1 on the season.
Minnesota State opened competition by winning nine of 10 matches en route to a 37-6 win over Delaware Valley. Top-ranked junior Travis Krinkie earned an 18-2 technical fall at 174 pounds while sophomore Nick Smith and senior Zach Stevens picked up falls to aid the win. In the second session, the Mavericks raced to a 31-0 lead over second-year program Limestone and finished with a 39-6 victory. Krinkie again picked up a technical fall, as did seniors John Koons and Mathias Bitz and junior Jeff Pfaffinger.
The afternoon session began with a 38-6 win over Carson-Newman. Krinkie continued his dominance with his third technical fall of the day, followed by another from Koons at 184 pounds. Senior Tim Kraemer chipped in the lone fall in the dual, dispatching his opponent in just 1:30 for his third win of the day. The closest dual of the event for the Mavericks came against West Liberty State to close out competition. The Mavericks jumped to a 23-0 advantage but the Hilltoppers took three of the final five matches to close the gap. Sophomore Andy Pickar earned the lone fall in the match at 165 pounds while Koons earned an 11-0 major decision.
Five Mavericks went a perfect 4-0 on the day. Krinkie led the way at 174 pounds with three technical falls and a forfeit, while Koons earned two tech falls and two major decisions at 184. Stevens posted two decisions, a major decision and a fall at 141 and junior Brandon Girtz earned two major decisions, a decision and tech fall. Heavyweight Kraemer had three decisions and a fall.
