No. 8 Augustana defeats Northern State 34-9

January 21, 2006

Eighth-ranked Augustana College picked up eight victories en route to a 34-9 win over instate rival Northern State University Saturday night in front of 523 fans at the Elmen Center.

The Vikings improved to 9-2 in duals, while Northern State dropped to 2-3.

Augustana had some misfortune at the outset of the dual. Chris Trampe, the Vikingsí 125-pounder, was leading 5-1 over Austin Johnsrud in the first period and in control of the match when he was forced to retire due to an injury. The injury default gave the Wolves a quick 6-0 lead.

The lead was short-lived though as Jeremie Degen and Jordan Burmeister posted back-to-back major decisions at 133 and 141 pounds to give Augustana an 8-6 edge. Degen defeated Logan Hayman 13-3, while Burmeister picked up a 9-1 win over Mark Burkart.

Ryan King, ranked No. 6 at 149 pounds, kept the winning ways going for Augie. After a scoreless first period against Jesse Wood, King turned up the pressure in the final two periods to record a 10-5 decision. Matt McDougall then boosted the Viking lead to 14-6 with a 9-4 decision over Dana Dargatz at 157 pounds.

Northern State picked up its other victory at 165 pounds where Matt Englund upset No. 7 Cody Henriksen 7-1. Englund led 2-0 after one period and 3-1 after two periods. He then scored an escape early in the third period to go ahead 4-1. A late takedown and 2:56 of riding time accounted for the final score.

The Vikings dominated the upper weights. At 174 pounds, Dusty Wilking was leading Spencer Rocker 8-0 when Wilking pinned Rocker at the 4:09 mark. That made the score 20-9 in favor of Augustana.

Following a forfeit at 184 pounds, Tim Boldt, ranked No. 2 at 197 pounds, used 9 takedowns to pick up a 20-7 major decision over Todd Naasz. Heavyweight Cris Bietz wrapped up the dual with an 11-3 major decision over Jess Hockley.

The Vikings return to the mat on Friday, January 27, when they travel to Mankato, Minn., to face No. 2 Minnesota State University in a 7 p.m. dual.
