Sanders' and Bryce's victories clinch 18-15 win over Wyoming
January 28, 2006
FARGO, ND -- Thanks to Eric Sanders' pin at 133 pounds and Jacob Bryce's victory at 197, North Dakota State won its fourth consecutive match defeating Wyoming 18-15 in front of a crowd of 647 at the Bison Sports Arena on Saturday, Jan. 28.
The match began at 125 pounds when Wyoming's Bryce Leonhardt defeated NDSU's Mike Meger 10-4. Meger kept it close for two periods but was outscored in the final session 6-2.
North Dakota State (4-3) bounced back with Eric Sanders making quick work of Wyoming's Cody Grant, pinning him in 1 minute, 37 seconds. Sanders picked up career win No. 30 and has now won his last three bouts, two of them coming by fall.
Wyoming (4-6) stormed back with victories at 141, 149 and 157 pounds. Cowboy 141-pounder Shay Lawrence led throughout the match and shut out NDSU's David Cunningham 5-0. At 149 pounds, Gabe Mooney fell to Wyoming's Carter Downing 11-6, giving Wyoming the early 9-6 lead. North Dakota State's Andrew Quittschreiber made his dual-match debut but fell short to 2005 NCAA national qualifier Dan Clum by the score of 7-4 at 157 pounds.
The Bison bounced back when 165-pound freshman Zach Molitor defeated Gary Dack 6-1. Molitor never lost the lead in the match and now has won three consecutive matches.
At 174 pounds, junior Matt Hermann picked up his second win in as many nights and career win No. 60, defeating Wyoming's Dan Barrone 7-4. NDSU's Matt Wetterling won his fourth match in a row by defeating Preston Pavich 12-8 in the 184-pound bout. Wetterling is now 21-6 on the season.
The match of the day came at 197 pounds between NDSU's Jacob Bryce and Wyoming's Malcolm Havens. With the match tied 2-2 early in the second period, Havens was called for an illegal slam as Bryce was dropped on the back of his head. After a brief recovery period, Bryce came out aggressive and was able to take down Havens in the final seconds of the second period, giving Bryce a 5-2 lead. In the final period, Bryce was able to escape Haven's grasp and notch another takedown with 1:09 remaining. Bryce went on to win the match 8-3 and gave the Bison the 18-12 advantage.
Leading by six points going into the heavyweight bout, anything short of a Wyoming pin would give the Bison a victory. NDSU's Mike Maresh and Dusty Hoffschneider wrestled in an electrifying match with Hoffschneider coming out on top 11-6. The loss was Maresh's first of his season and career but North Dakota State came out victorious at the end by the score of 18-15.
The Bison will take their four-match winning streak on the road as they travel to Northern Colorado on Feb. 6 and Utah Valley State on Feb. 7. Both matches are scheduled for a 8 p.m. central start.
