Wipperfurth leads Mustangs to first NSIC win over Northern State
Aberdeen, S.D.: Joel Wipperfurth (Sr., Lodi, Wis.) earned a 8-1 decision over nationally-ranked Todd Naasz from Northern State University to give the Southwest Minnesota State University wrestling team their first win of the season in conference action. Going into the final match of the evening at 197, the score was tied at 16-16 before Wipperfurth gave the Mustangs the win, 19-16.
The win for Southwest improves their overall record to 4-6 and their NSIC mark to 1-1. Northern State now falls to 3-6 overall and 0-3 in the NSIC.
Seventh ranked Tim Johns (Sr., Harrisburg, S.D.) and Kurt Smtih (So., Brookings, S.D.) each won their match via technical fall. Johns defeated Spencer Dockery 17-0 at 174 while Smith defeated Austin Johnsrud at 125 16-0.
Keefer Jensen (Sr., Missouri Valley, Iowa) and Ryan Reed (Jr., Flandreau, S.D.) each picked up wins for SMSU at 141 and 133 respectively.
Southwest Minnesota State will be back at home this Saturday, Feb. 9 when they take on second-ranked Minnesota State University, Mankato.
