#1 Nebraska-Omaha holds off #6 Augustana 23-17
Augustana rallied from a late 8-point deficit, but it wasnít enough as top-ranked Nebraska-Omaha edged the sixth-ranked Vikings 23-17 in front of 1,247 fans at the Elmen Center Wednesday night.
Nebraska-Omaha improved to 10-0 in duals and clinched the North Central Conference title with a 3-0 league record. Augustana fell to 12-5 overall and 1-2 in the NCC.
The Vikings trailed 17-9 with three matches remaining. Nate Buys, ranked No. 4 at 184 pounds, picked up a big win when he scored a takedown with 38 seconds left in overtime to earn a 4-2 decision over Nate Oviatt.
Tim Boldt, the top-ranked wrestler at 197 pounds, tied the dual at 17-17 with a workmanlike 22-7 technical fall over UNOís Nick Edmonds. Boldt led 4-1 after one period and 11-2 after two periods before scoring 11 points in the final two minutes to earn the extra two team points.
However, UNO countered at heavyweight with Les Sigman, the three-time national champion and top-ranked heavyweight. Sigman jumped out to a quick 7-1 lead on Augustanaís Cris Bietz, before Bietz scored an escape and takedown to trim the margin to 7-4. In the second period, Sigman got a takedown midway through the period then registered the pin at the 4:19 mark to seal the win for the Mavericks.
Augustana grabbed the early lead in the dual when Chris Trampe won by forfeit as UNO did not have a 125-pound wrestler. UNO then reeled off four straight wins to take a 14-6 lead. Then, Augieís Cody Henriksen scored the biggest win of the night for the Vikings. Henriksen, who is unranked at 165 pounds, got a takedown with 5 seconds left in regulation to defeat fifth-rated Ross Taplin 5-3.
While the Mavericks were without a 125-pounder Cody Garcia, who is ranked No. 2 in the nation, Augustana was minus two starters in Ryan King, ranked No. 2 at 149 pounds, and Austin Scarset, ranked No. 5 at 157 pounds.
The Vikings are now off until Sunday, February 26, when they travel to Omaha for the North Regional Championships. The top four placers at the regional championships advance to the NCAA Division II National Championships.
