SMSU falls to #15 MSU Moorhead on emotional night in Marshall
Marshall, Minn: On an emotional night in which Shawn Plumley made his first appearance at Southwest Minnesota State University in six months since his motorcycle accident, the 15th-ranked Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling team defeated SMSU 28-18.
The Mustangs end the regular season with a 5-8 record overall and a 1-2 mark in NSIC action. MSU Moorhead improves to 10-7 overall and 3-0 in the NSIC.
Plumley provided an emotional lift to the Mustangs and served as an honorary captain. The Mustangs tried to build off of Plumley’s presence on the bench, but lost the first two matches of the night by a combined two points. The Dragons’ Dave Burgard defeated Kurt Smith (So., Brookings, S.D.) at 125 via decision 2-1 then Troy MacFarland scored a 8-7 win over Ryan Reed (So., Flandreau, S.D.) at 133.
After MSU Moorhead built their lead to 16-0 after the first four matches, Aldon Struchen (Sr., Walnut Grove, Minn.) put SMSU on the board with a first period pin of Kyle Trout. Struchen scored the pin in 1:33. After the Dragons went up 22-6 thanks to a pin at 165, SMSU went on to win the next three matches. Seventh-ranked Tim Johns (Sr., Harrisburg, S.D.) defeated Skip Toops 12-6 at 174 and Tyler Johnson (RFr., Harrisburg, S.D.) earned a win via decision 4-3 at 184. Joel Wipperfurth (Sr., Lodi, Wis.) then picked up a pin at 197 as he defeated Josiah Bush. Wipperfurth trailed 7-2 heading into the second period and then hit a takedown before scoring the fall. In the final match of the night, #7 Chris Tuchscherer pinned Jeremy Schafer (Sr., Clara City, Minn.) to preserve the 28-18 win for MSU Moorhead.
Southwest Minnesota State will be off until Sunday, Feb. 28 when they travel to Omaha, Neb. to compete in the NCAA Division II North Regional Tournament. The tournament begins at 9:00 a.m.
