Augustana wrestlers gain 6 All-Americans; King, Boldt advance to semifinals
March 10, 2006
Session 1 Recap
The Augustana wrestling team bounced back strong in the second session of the 2006 NCAA Division II National Wrestling Championships Friday night in Findlay, Ohio.
The Vikings guaranteed themselves 6 All-Americans as they vaulted from 10th into fifth place in the team standings. Augustana, which has two wrestlers in the semifinals and four in the wrestlebacks, has 37.5 points, just 3 points behind Minnesota State-Mankato. Two-time defending national champion Nebraska-Omaha is in the lead with 63 points, followed by Nebraska-Kearney at 52.5 points.
Ryan King and Tim Boldt each advanced to the semifinals with wins in the second round. The four Vikings still alive in the wrestlebacks are Austin Scarset, Cody Henriksen, Nate Buys and Cris Bietz. All six wrestlers are All-Americans.
For King and Boldt, they became All-Americans for the third time in their careers. King becomes just the eighth Viking to be a three-time All-American in an Augie singlet. Boldt, who is a two-time All-American at Augustana, was a 2003 All-American at South Dakota State.
Scarset and Henrikesen are now two-time All-Americans while Buys and Bietz are All-Americans for the first time.
"We got six out of eight All-Americans, so I'm happy with that," Augustana head coach Jason Reitmeier said. "However, I'm disappointed with the way wrestled in the first round. I thought we were a little flat. We are a better team than what we showed. But we are starting to pick up some steam and showing what we are capable of doing, so hopefully we can keep it going."
King, ranked No. 1 at 149 pounds registered an impressive 14-4 major decision over Don Cummings of Mercyhurst, while Boldt, tallied a 9-5 decision over Cody Mumma of Western State (Colo.).
King scored two takedowns and a 3-point near fall to lead 7-1 after one period en route to his win. Boldt, meanwhile, had a little tougher time with Mumma. Leading 2-1, Boldt got a takedown as the first period buzzer sounded to lead 4-1. He then led 6-2 after two periods and 9-2 late in the third. Mumma did score a reversal with 18 seconds left in the match, and was awarded a point when Boldt was called for stalling.
Buys and Bietz each lost their second-round matches before bouncing back with wins in the wrestlebacks. Buys, ranked No. 4 at 184 pounds, dropped an 11-4 decision to No. 3 Mike Corcetti of Pittsburgh-Johnstown before defeating Bryan Cowdin of Minnesota State-Moorhead 3-1. Buys led Corcetti 3-0 with 1 minute left in the second period before giving up a takedown and a 2-point near fall at the end of the period. Against Cowdin, there was no score in the first period. Then each wrestler scored an escape from the down position. Buys finally scored the winning takedown with 39 seconds left in the third period.
Bietz, ranked No. 4 at heavyweight, lost an 11-3 major decision to No. 3 Tervel Dlagnev of Nebraska-Kearney in the second round. However, he came back and defeated Bryan Black of Upper Iowa 6-1. Bietz scored two takedowns in the first period to gain the upper hand in the match.
Scarset and Henriksen each won two matches Friday night to extend their seasons. Scarset, ranked No. 6 at 157 pounds, fell behind 7-1 in the first period before rallying for an 18-10 major decision over Joe Strittmatter of Pittsburgh-Johnstown. He followed that with a 3-2 win over Jason Leavitt of Central Oklahoma.
Henriksen, ranked seventh at 165 pounds, pinned Phil Hart of Fort Hays State in 3:34 before beating No. 3 Blake Peterson 9-3. Henriksen got a quick takedown and 3-point near fall to take control of the match. He added a pair of takedowns in the second period to secure the victory.
Augustana did have two wrestlers eliminated from the tournament. Chris Trampe, ranked eighth at 125 pounds, defeated Devlon Webb of Chadron State 4-2 before dropping a 9-6 decision to third-ranked Rob McCabe of Adams State.
Andre VanderVelde, ranked fifth at 141 pounds, lost his first wrestleback match, falling 9-8 to Western State's Chris Freije. VanderVelde trailed 6-5 going into the third period. He quickly scored an escape and then got a takedown with 1:16 left to go ahead 8-6. But Freije got a reversal with 37 seconds remaining and rode out the clock. Freije then picked up a riding time point to get the win.
