North Dakota State sets 2006-07 schedule

FARGO, ND -- Conference play in the newly formed Western WrestlingConference (WWC) and the first year of NCAA Division I postseasoneligibility highlight the 2006-07 schedule for the North Dakota State wrestling squad.

On March 3, the Bison will get their first taste of the postseason sincethe 2003-04 season when they travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa, for the NCAAWest Regional. Qualifiers from the regional will compete at the Division IChampionships in Detroit on March 15-17.

Thanks to an NCAA ruling in September 2004, North Dakota State couldreclassify its wrestling and volleyball teams to Division I in three yearsinstead of five. NDSU is on track to reclassify in all sports by 2008-09.

NDSU will have six conference matches and open up its inaugural WWC seasonagainst Utah Valley State at the Bison Sports Arena on Jan. 19, beforetraveling to conference foes Wyoming and Air Force on Jan. 26-27.

The Bison will kick-off the season in Fargo by hosting the 37th annualBison Open on Nov. 12. NDSU will continue their open tournament season bytraveling to Nebraska-Omaha for the nation's largest single-day collegiatemeet, the Kaufman-Brand Open on Nov. 18, and will make their first of twotrips to Cedar Falls, Iowa, for the UNI Open on December 3.

North Dakota State will host its first dual of the year against borderrival South Dakota State on December 15 and then have almost a month offbefore competing at the Virginia Duals for the third consecutive year Jan.12-13.

February will be the busiest month for the Bison with six dual matches.Eastern Illinois and Northern Colorado come to Fargo the first weekend ofthe month and the Bison will travel west to take on Portland State andOregon State the following weekend. After a home match with the 2005 WestRegional champion Northern Iowa on Feb. 16, the Bison will conclude theregular season with their second dual against South Dakota State inBrookings, S.D., two days later.

The Bison finished the 2005-06 season with a record of 6-6 and are slatedto wrestle six teams from last year's schedule. NDSU had a 5-1 record overthose opponents, picking up victories over Air Force, Northern Colorado,Portland State, Utah Valley State and Wyoming. Northern Iowa defeated theBison last year in Cedar Falls.
