2006-07 captains named at St. Cloud State

St. Cloud State University head wrestling coach, Steve Costanzo, announced on Oct. 16, his team's selections for the 2006-07 wrestling team captains.

Captains selected are Tom Messerli (Sr, 149/157, Lafayette, MN). Tom is the son of Dale and Paulette Messerli and is majoring in finance at SCSU. Russell Smith (RFr, 174, Owatonna, MN). Russell is the son of David and Jeanie Smith and is majoring in biology at SCSU. Nicholas Wilkes (Jr, 184/197, Onamia, MN). Nicholas is the son of Peter and Laurie Wilkes and is majoring in criminal justice at SCSU.

“I have complete confidence that Tom, Russell and Nick will be tremendous leaders in their role as team captains,” said head coach Steve Costanzo.

The captains were selected by vote from their team members. The Huskies have concluded their pre-season workouts and now are preparing for the Cardinal Red/Black Challenge on Saturday, November 4, 2006.

St. Cloud State Wrestling begins practice

The St. Cloud State University wrestlers have returned to the mats and are preparing for the 2006-07 campaign. Last Thursday marked the official day of practice. Excitement is looming in the wrestling room as the Huskies welcome eighteen new recruits to the program as well as a new coaching staff.

“I am pleased with the team development after a strong preseason of conditioning and weight training,” said head coach Steve Costanzo. “The guys are getting better conditioned and they are really starting to gel as a team.”

The Huskies will be a young and inexperience team in 2006-07, but talented. St. Cloud State University marked a top 10 recruiting class among NCAA Non Division I schools according to Wrestling USA Magazine this past summer. Senior tri-captain Tom Messerli is SCSU’s lone senior on their roster of thirty-one wrestlers.

Husky wrestlers give back to community

The St. Cloud State University wrestling team gave back to the community on Oct. 14 as it helped the local Red Cross with a construction project. The St. Cloud area Red Cross recently purchased a new building on West Germain St. near the downtown area and is working to bring the building to code.

The task of the Husky wrestlers was to tear out the old communication wires due to the fact that plastic coating on the wires would be very toxic if it were ever to catch fire. The team worked in three groups each equaling one hour shifts per group. All wires were then recycled and brought in for cash to the organization.

“The SCSU wrestlers did a great thing today,” said assistant coach Severin Walsh. “We are very fortunate at SCSU to have such a willing and giving group of young men.”
