BROOKINGS, SD -- Members of the South Dakota State University wrestling
team opened their season Saturday, wrestling at the Daktronics/Warren
Williamson Open at Frost Arena.
More than 200 wrestlers from 17 different schools participated.
Augustana's Nate Buys was voted the Outstanding Wrestler, while David
Greenwald of Iowa Central recorded the Most Pins award.
Members of the South Dakota State team competed unattached. Jeff Cooley
and Nick Kulseth led the way for the Jacks in 133 pounds by placing
second and third overall. Kulseth defeated Chism Fink, 3-1, to secure
third place.
At 174 pounds, senior Travis Gottschalk went 4-1 in competition to
secure second-place honors. Ryan Meyer defeated Skip Toops of
Minnesota-Moorhead, 3-2, to turn in a fifth-place finish.
Redshirt freshman Tyler Sorenson finished second overall by going 4-1 at 184 pounds.
Heavyweight Jason Stripling closed out the tournament upending Jacob
Combs, 3-1. The 3-1 victory gave Stripling a third-place finish.
Freshman Seth Fischer recorded a sixth-place finish in the heavyweight
division.
South Dakota State will next be in action next Saturday when it travels
to Fort Dodge, Iowa, for the Harold Nichols Open. Start time is set for
9 a.m.
