St. Cloud, Minn. -- St. Cloud State University wrestling coach Steve Costanzo has announced the signing of Forest Lake’s Lucas Munkelwitz and Bemidji’s Joe Andersen
to North Central Conference and national letters of intent. Both high
school seniors plan on attending SCSU in the fall of 2007.
In 2005-06, Munkelwitz placed fifth at the Minnesota State High School
League championships in the 160-pound division. He also placed first
for Forest Lake at the 7AAA Sectional last winter. In 2006, Munkelwitz
placed eighth and gained All-America honors at the Greco Roman Junior
National tournament in Fargo. In 2005, he placed fourth and earned
All-America honors at the Freestyle Cadet National Tournament in Fargo.
“I am very excited about the addition of Lucas to our
line-up,” Costanzo said. “Lucas will add strength to our
upper weights, and he should be able to help us out immediately. He is
a fierce competitior and a seasoned veteran of the sport.”
Munkelwitz plans on majoring in criminal justice at SCSU. He is the son of Mark and Julie Munkelwitz of Forest Lake.
A four-time Minnesota state qualifier, Andersen placed third at the
MSHSL championships in 2005 and fifth in 2006. He owns a 170-47 record
as a high school record, and Andersen is projected to compete at
157-pounds for the SCSU wrestling program.
“I am extremely excited to have Joe on board,” Costanzo
said. “Joe possesses all of the characteristics that SCSU
wrestling is looking for in a student-athlete. We look for great things
to come from him as a Husky.”
Andersen plans on majoring in mass communications at SCSU. He is the son of Steve and Suzette Andersen of Bemidji.
Costanzo is in his first season as head coach at St. Cloud State. The
Huskies compete in the always rugged North Central Conference at the
NCAA Division II level. On Nov. 18, SCSU will travel to the Cobber Open
at Concordia-Moorhead and on Dec. 9, SCSU will host the Husky Open
tournament in Halenbeck Hall.
Founded in 1869, St. Cloud State University enrolls over 16,000
