SCSU's Wilkes named NCC Wrestler of the Week

November 21, 2006

St. Cloud, Minn. - St. Cloud State University junior Nick Wilkes (Onamia/H.S.) was named the North Central Conference Wrestler of the Week on Nov. 21, after his outstanding performance at the Concordia College (Moorhead) Cobber Open on Nov. 18.

Wilkes went 4-0 to win the 197-pound division at the Cobber Open. On his way to the title he pinned Andrew Price of MSU-Moorhead in 1:07, won an 8-2 decision over Erik Rogness, and in the semifinals he charted a 5-1 decision over Matt Nelson of MSU-Moorhead. In the championship bout Wilkes pinned 2006 NAIA national champion, Justin Schlect of Dickinson State, in 5:50.

Wilkes shares the NCC Wrestler of the Week title with Jacob Marrs of Nebraska-Omaha who won the 197-pound division at the UNO Open.

Wilkes was a two-time All-America wrestler at Itasca C.C.  In 2005-06, Wilkes was a red-shirt athlete at Dana College before making the move to St. Cloud State this fall.  Wilkes also serves as a team captain for the Huskies this winter.  He is the son of Peter and Laurie Wilkes of Onamia.

The Huskies take a week off for the holiday but are back on the mats December 3, at the Northern Iowa Open in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The matches will begin at 9:00 a.m.
