St. Cloud, Minn. - St.
Cloud State University junior Nick Wilkes (Onamia/H.S.) was named
the North Central Conference Wrestler of the Week on Nov. 21, after his
outstanding performance at the Concordia College (Moorhead) Cobber Open
on Nov. 18.
Wilkes went 4-0 to win the 197-pound division at the Cobber Open. On
his way to the title he pinned Andrew Price of MSU-Moorhead in 1:07,
won an 8-2 decision over Erik Rogness, and in the semifinals he charted
a 5-1 decision over Matt Nelson of MSU-Moorhead. In the championship
bout Wilkes pinned 2006 NAIA national champion, Justin Schlect of
Dickinson State, in 5:50.
Wilkes shares the NCC Wrestler of the Week title with Jacob Marrs of
Nebraska-Omaha who won the 197-pound division at the UNO Open.
Wilkes was a two-time All-America wrestler at Itasca C.C. In
2005-06, Wilkes was a red-shirt athlete at Dana College before making
the move to St. Cloud State this fall. Wilkes also serves as a
team captain for the Huskies this winter. He is the son of Peter
and Laurie Wilkes of Onamia.
The Huskies take a week off for the holiday but are back on the mats
December 3, at the Northern Iowa Open in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The matches
will begin at 9:00 a.m.
