The St. Cloud State wrestling team (2-3 overall, 0-2 NCC) will bounce
back after two tough losses, travelling to Marshall on Tuesday to face
off against Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs at 7:00 p.m. SMSU
charted their lone win this season over the University of Mary, and
lost this past Friday to Augustana 32-6. The Huskies will continue
their week in Minneapolis, going head-to-head against Augsburg College,
at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 27.
HUSKIES SUFFER TOUGH LOSSES TO #4 UNO
AND #11 AUGUSTANA
The Huskies were unable to hold on to their two-meet winning streak as
they went up against two wrestling powerhouses this past weekend. Both
Friday and Saturday the Huskies took on nationally ranked teams that
included four-ranked wrestlers on each squad.
In his first trip back to his alma-mater, as SCSU’s head coach, Steve
Costanzo was able to see Adam Minnette (New Prague) collect a pin that
was worth six of the teams 12 points. Minnette pinned Derek Keasling at
1:42 in the 157 pound match. The Mavericks were able to tally 37 points
as three of their four top-ranked wrestlers recorded pins and the
fourth charted a major decision.
The Huskies fell to Augustana on Saturday, 27-12, as three of the
Vikings top wrestlers earned major decisions, while the Huskies were
able to come up with three wins that included a pin and a 4-3 double
overtime win.
Nick Wasche (Cedar) got the Huskies to within one, 4-3, after the
Vikings won by decision in the 125 pound bout. Wasche came up
victorious as he won a 5-1 decision over Adam Schlee at 133 pounds.
Tim Whitley (Wenatchee, Wash.) continued the increase in Husky points,
pinning Jordan Burmeister at 6:07 in the 141 pound weight class.
The other sole win for the Huskies was the closest match of the day. At
184 pounds, Nick Wilkes (Onamia) made a reversal with 37 seconds left
in the final period to tie the score 3-3 and continuing to wrestle
strong, picking up a doubleovertime win as Beau Severtson could not
escape Wilkes strong hold.
