HUSKIES FINISH ROAD TRIP IN IOWA
The St.
Cloud State wrestling team (3-4 overall, 0-2 NCC) will finish up
their three week road trip on Friday and Saturday, February 2 and 3, in
Iowa facing off against no.7 Upper Iowa and wrestling in their final
open of the season at Dubuque University. The Huskies will face
the Upper Iowa Peacocks on Friday, at 7:00 p.m., in Fayette, Iowa. The
Peacocks were ranked number seven in the most recent polls and have two
ranked wrestlers on their bench. The Dubuque Open will be held in
Dubuque, Iowa, with the meet beginning at 10:00 a.m.
HUSKIES PICK UP A WIN AND A LOSS
The Huskies bounced back after two tough losses two weeks ago, as they
travelled to Marshall picking up their third duals win at Southwest
Minnesota State. SCSU was unable to capitalize in Minneapolis when they
faced Augsburg College on Sunday. Two pins and a tech fall helped
aid St. Cloud State to a 30-9 dual match victory over Southwest
Minnesota State on Tuesday evening in Marshall. After the
Mustangs went ahead 3-0 in the 125-pound match, the Huskies picked up
the next five matches that included pins by Grant Johnson (Cold Spring)
and by Adam Minnette (New Prague). At 149 pounds, Johnson pinned Luke
Giese at 4:20. Minnette quickly turned Chris Fast on the mat at 157
pounds, earning the pin at 1:27. The final four matches were
highlighted by a tech fall during the 184 match and a major decision at
197. Junior Nick Wilkes picked up his ninth win of the season, winning
17-0 over C.D. Johnson at 184. Jairo Sandoval took home the major
decision at 197, winning 15-4, over Cody Chamblin.
In Minneapolis, Augsburg opened the match with three straight pins.
AC’s Seth Flodeen, ranked No. 3 nationally at 125 pounds, claimed a
second-period pin of Westy Hanson (Fr., Crookston, Minn.). Jamie Rocha
scored a pin over Nick Wasche (So., Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) in the
first period at 133. Quincy Osborn, ranked No. 1 in the country at 141,
ended his match with Tim Whitely (Fr., Wenatchee, Wash.) with a pin in
just 19 seconds. Augsburg’s Marcus LaVesseur, ranked No. 1 nationally
at 165, maintained his unbeaten collegiate record with a third-period
technical fall of Matt Steffenson (Jr., Onamia, Minn.). Robbie Gotreau,
ranked No. 3 nationally at 174, needed just 3:15 to claim a 15-0,
technical fall victory over Neil Russell (So., St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo
HS). Gotreau is now 29-4 on the season. Jeremy Anderson ranked No. 1 in
the country at 157, improved to 27-1 on the season with a 16-4,
major-decision win over Adam Minnette (Jr., New Prague, Minn.). Jason
Adams scored a 8-5 win over Grant Johnson (Fr., Cold Spring,
Minn./Rocori HS) at 149. George Lynaugh claimed a 6-4 triumph over Nick
Wilkes (Jr., Onamia, Minn.) at 184, while Wally O’Connor scored a 6-1
win over Jairo Sandoval (Jr., Miami, Fla./Miami Senior HS). Augsburg’s
Andy Neumann, ranked No. 7 nationally at heavyweight, received a
forfeit to end the match.
