Huskies to compete in NCAA DII North Regional Championships

The St. Cloud State wrestling team (4-7 overall, 0-3 NCC), ranked sixth in the region, will compete at the NCAA Division II North Central Regional Championships this Sunday, February 25, in Moorhead. The meet will be wrestled at Alex Nemzek Hall and will begin at noon.

Junior, Nick Wilkes, earned the highest ranking for the Huskies, slated second at 184 pounds. Grant Johnson was the other Husky ranked in the top four in his weight class at 149 pounds.

Huskies end season on a high note
The St. Cloud State wrestling team dropped a tough loss to no.4 ranked Minnesota State University Mankato on Thursday while picking up a huge win over the University of Mary while honoring their lone senior.

The Huskies, 38-3 loss to MSUM, was highlighted by a win at the 184 weight class, charted by Nick Wilkes. Wilkes got a slight scare as he went down early and used his injury time-out but was able to fight back charting a 14-9 decision over MSUM’s Kevin Wallraff. Wilkes sat out of Friday’s meet against Mary to recover before regionals.

While honoring their lone senior, Tom Messerli (Lafayette) on Friday, the Huskies charted their fourth win of the season, 31-12, over the Univesrity of Mary Marauders.

The Huskies recieved a quick six points at hte 125 pound weight class as a default by the University of Mary gavve Westy Hanson the victory. Sonny Silva increased his overall duals record to 5-2 at 133 pounds after beating the Marauder’s Aric Tarr, 10-5, earning 8 of his points on take-downs. Tim Whitley earned the Huskies second six-point default after Mary forfeited at 141 pounds.

Grant Johnson earned a two point take-down in the first period of the 149 pound match, and followed with a single point escape in the second after choosing to go down to start the period. A near pin late in the third earned Johnson his additonal points, winning by decision 8-0 over Mary’s Shawn Sneva. A take-down and a reversal evened the score2-2 in the first thirty seconds of the 157 pounds match between Marauder’s Devin Nagel and SCSU’s Adam Minnette. After being down, 6-4, at the end of the first period, Minnette chose to be nuetral at the start of the second, with his decision paying off as he tallied his fifth pin of the year at 4:39.

Tom Anderson increased SCSU’s lead to 28-0, winning by decision, 6-3, over Mary’s Brady Nagel. Anderson, wrestling at 165 pounds, lead 3-2 nearly the entire match, but picked up two points just before time expired in the second and charted his final point from riding time. Neil Russell picked up two points on a takedown in the third to lead him to victory, 7-3, winning by decision over David Oliver at 174 pounds. Adam Hill, wrestling in his second dual match of the year at 184 pounds, was unable to overcome Kurt Weidrich of Mary, falling at 2:25.

After a double-forfeit at 197 pounds, Jairo Sandoval from SCSU faced off against Mary’s heavyweight, Kevin McCleary. Despite earning the first two points, Sandoval was unable to overcome the heavyweight falling at 3:25.
