BROOKINGS, SD -- South Dakota State University
redshirt freshman Ryan Meyer was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler
for the 2006-07 season Saturday night at the teams annual awards
banquet.
Meyer, a Parkston native, garnered a team high 23-11 record and was the
lone Jackrabbit to wrestle at the Division I Championships after
placing second overall at 165 pounds at the NCAA West Regional. Meyer,
who also shared the Outstanding Freshman Award with Tyler Sorenson,
received the Most Improved Award as well.
Junior Jason Stripling received both the Most Pins Award and Highest
GPA Award. The Minneota, Minn., native, was second on the team in
victories this winter with a 22-6 record and posted 11 victories by
fall.
Receiving the Coaches Award was senior Nate Althoffk. Althoff posted an
11-5 record and was named a second alternate for the NCAA Division I
tournament this past winter. Fellow senior Travis Gottschalk was
awarded the Inspirational Award following a senior season in which he
recorded 14 victories.
Others honored included Dan Bonte, earning the Hardest Worker Award;
Chris Moran, earning the Most Takedowns Award; and Justin Retallic
earning the Weight Room Award.
South Dakota State finished the 2006 season with an 8-8-1 overall
record. The Jackrabbits placed three wrestlers in the finals of the
NCAA West Regional on March 3.
