Viking's Henriksen Awarded NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship

Augustana College wrestler Cody Henriksen is one of 29 male student-athletes who participated in winter sports to be awarded an NCAA postgraduate scholarship, the NCAA announced.

Henriksen, an Arlington, S.D., native, is the 24th Augustana student-athlete to earn a postgraduate scholarship. In addition, he is the sixth Viking wrestler, and second in three years to receive the scholarship. Aaron Graumann received a postgraduate scholarship in 2007.

Henriksen was a three-time All-American for the Viking wrestling team, posting a 73-33 career record in the process. A three-time All-North Central Conference

performer, Henriksen placed third at the 2007 Division II National Championships at 174 pounds after accumulating a 25-8 record. In 2006, he placed fourth at nationals at 165 pounds, after finishing sixth at 165 pound in 2005. That season, the Vikings were the national runner-up.

A two-year captain, Henriksen was a three-time NWCA All-Academic team selection.

Off the mat, Henriksen carries a 3.74 grade point average as a biology and philosophy major. In addition, he is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, is a student mentor and is a volunter at Children's Care Hospital.

After graduation, Henriksen plans to attend dental school.

The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage postgraduate education by rewarding the Association’s most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in NCAA championship and/or emerging sports. Athletics and academic achievements, as well as campus involvement, community service, volunteer activities and demonstrated leadership, are evaluated.

In maintaining the highest broad-based standards in the selection process, the program aims to reward those individuals whose dedication and effort are reflective of those characteristics necessary to succeed and thrive through postgraduate study in an accredited graduate degree program.

To qualify for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship, a student-athlete must have an overall grade-point average of 3.200 (on a 4.000 scale) or its equivalent and must have performed with distinction as a member of the varsity team in the sport in which the student-athlete was nominated. The student-athlete also must intend to continue academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a full-time or part-time graduate student.
