FARGO, N.D. -- The North Dakota State
wrestling team and 197-pound sophomore Jacob Bryce were named to the
National Wrestling Coaches Association annual All-Academic Top 30 and
individual All-Academic wrestling teams for the 2006-07 season.
In its first year as a Division I championship-eligible team, NDSU
finished tenth in the standings with a team GPA of 3.0151. For teams to
be eligible for consideration, teams comprise 12 student athletes,
including the 10 wrestlers that were the entries in the NCAA tournament
conference qualifier.
Bryce, a business administration major, had the second-highest
grade-point average among the individual honorees with a 3.93. Bryce
was a 2007 NCAA national qualifier with a third-place finish at the
NCAA West Regional. For the season, Bryce finished with an 18-10
record, which included tournament championships at the Bison Open and
MSU Moorhead Dragon Open. Over the past two seasons, Bryce has made
every start for the Bison at 197 pounds.
Individually, wrestlers must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA, been
an NCAA qualifier or had at least a .600 winning percentage, and must
have competed in at least 60 percent of their team’s schedule. The
other way to qualify for the All-Academic team is have a 3.0 cumulative
and been an NCAA All-American.
Duke University’s 3.386 was the highest team GPA and Western Wrestling
Conference foe Northern Iowa finished fifth overall with a 3.144.
NCAA All-American Tyler McCormick of Missouri, also a business major,
edged out Bryce for top individual honors with a 3.95 grade-point
average.
North Dakota State is a member of the Western Wrestling Conference and
finished with an 8-5-1 record overall. The Bison became eligible for
NCAA Championships in the 2006-07 season, qualifying three wrestlers in
their first year.
