Jackrabbits capture Virginia Duals title

HAMPTON, VA -- The South Dakota State University wrestling team routed Newport News Apprentice, 31-7, Saturday night to capture the American College Division title at the Virginia Duals.

After dropping the first two weight classes to the Builders, SDSU won its final eight matches, including one by fall, to defeat Newport News and capture its second American College Division title in three years.

Derek Pirner, a Elk Point native, brought the Jacks within four at 141 by upending Josh Flint, 7-4. Redshirt freshman Dan Bonte followed by defeating Jeremiah Jones by fall in 6 minutes, 49 seconds. With the win, the redshirt freshman went 3-0 for the tournament. After Sean Flynn defeated Matt Perry, 13-5, Parkston native Ryan Meyer posted a major decision against Rudy Leming. Meyer upended Leming, 10-1, to move to 2-0 in Virginia.

At 174, redshirt freshman Chris Moran defeated Eric Lybarger, 11-8, while Tyler Sorenson followed by upending Justin Gillard by technical fall at 184. Sorenson, a Garretson native, defeated Gillard, 16-1, to record his third tech fall in Virginia.

Senior Travis Gottschalk, who went 3-0 for the tournament at 197, defeated Kendall Ridenour, 6-3, while Jason Stripling closed out the scoring for the Jacks by upending Cecil Lee, 6-4.

Overall, SDSU posted one pin, one technical fall and two major decisions in its finals match against Newport News.

For the tournament, SDSU recorded five wins by fall, four technical falls and five major decisions. Individually, Sorenson outscored his opponents by a score of 49-4, while 10 different Jackrabbits went undefeated in competition.

With the win, South Dakota State brought its dual record to 4-4, while Newport News moved to 7-4.

The Jackrabbits will host their first Western Wrestling Conference and home match of the year against Utah Valley State on Jan. 20. Start time is set for 7 p.m. at Frost Arena.
