Bismarck, ND -- The Southwest Minnesota State University wrestling team
defeated the University of Mary 33-16 in its first NSIC dual meet of
the season.
The Mustangs improve to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the NSIC with the win,
while U-Mary falls to 0-2 overall in duals and 0-1 in the NSIC.
Each team won four matches, but SMSU came out on top as three Mustangs
came away with pins while the Marauders scored just one pin. SMSU also
earned 12 points from two open U-Mary weight classes.
Mary who went down by 12 points early due to openings at 125 and 141,
received a victory at 133 as Aric Tarr defeated Michel Barrie 5-3. The
Mustangs were able to rebound as Luke Geise pinned Mary's Tyler Krumm
3:40 into the 149 match to put SMSU up 18-3.
In the 157 pound class Chris Fast was defeated by Devin Nagel 14-2.
SMSU turned around to battle back in the next two matches as Justin
Crouch defeated Brady Nagel at 3:44 in the 165 match and Tyler Johnson
downed Charles Cheeks at 2:48 in the 174 contest, putting SMSU up 30-7.
Mary did not give in as they rallied back to win the next two matches
as the Mustang's Cody Chamblin fell to Kurt Weidrich in the 184 class
and then the 2005 NAIA Champion Jesse Laber pinned SMSU's C.D. Johnson
4:15 into the match.
SMSU’s David Marshall finished off the dual with a 7-1 win in the
heavyweight battle over Mary's Joe Thompson.
Southwest will be back in action Friday, Jan. 19th at home versus
Augustana College at 7 p.m. in the P.E. Gym
