Fargo, ND -- Western Wrestling Conference foe Northern Iowa (6-9-1, 3-0
Western Wrestling Conference) proved to be too much for North Dakota
State (8-5, 3-2 WWC) as the Panthers came out with a 31-9 victory in
front of 774 spectators at the Bison Sports Arena on Friday, February
17.
The Bison got off to a quick start as 125-pounder Eric Hoffman won his
sixth consecutive match, defeating Grant Ruge 8-1. Hoffman has a
team-leading 18 victories this season.
After a pin at 133 pounds by UNI's Kyle Anson over Eric Sanders, NDSU's
Gabe Mooney tied the match at six with a 6-2 decision over Mike Whisler.
UNI would go on to win the next five bouts, including a pin by No. 18
Moza Fay over Adam Aho at 157 pounds and a technical fall victory for
No. 5 165-pounder Nick Baima over NDSU's Mike Quamme.
This match marked the last home dual for 174-pound senior Matt Hermann,
who was honored before the match. His bout with Alex Dolly was
scoreless through one and a half periods but Dolly pulled away, winning
10-2.
North Dakota State would get on the board once more as Jacob Bryce
defeated Andrew Anderson 7-4 at 197 pounds. Bryce went a perfect
5-0 this season in home duals.
Northern Iowa closed out the dual as a much larger heavyweight Tyler
Rhodes defeated NDSU's Justin LaGosh 16-7.
This dual was the last one at home this year for North Dakota
State. NDSU went 4-1 in home contests this season. The
Bison close out the regular season on Sunday, February 18, in
Brookings, S.D., when they take on border and WWC rival South Dakota
State. NDSU beat the Jackrabbits 30-14 on December 15.
