Johnnies to compete at Auggie Open Saturday Saint John’s
will travel to compete in the Auggie Open Saturday, Nov. 17. The meet
is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. at Si Melby Hall in Minneapolis.
Sophomore Mogi Baatar (Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia) went 4-1 as a freshman in
the 125-pound weight bracket last year.
SJU begins 2007-08 season with 2-2 record at Lakeland Duals
Sheboygan, Wis. – The majority of the Saint John’s varsity wrestling
squad traveled to Sheboygan, Wis. on Saturday, Nov. 10 to compete in
the Lakeland Duals. Saint John’s dropped the first two matches of
the 2007-08 season against Wis.-Platteville (21-23) and No. 7 Coe, Iowa
(9-32), but wasable to record back-to-back wins over Lakeland College
(20-19) and Wis.-Eau Claire (22-13).
The Johnnies were supported by a host of young talent this past
weekend. The freshman class dominated the Dual with three
freshmen remaining unbeaten at the close of the tournament.
Freshman Dustin Baxter (Fairbanks, Alaska/West Valley) accumulated a
3-0 record this weekend wrestling at 184. Baxter recorded a 7-3
decision over Greg Lalla of Coe College, major decisions over
Lakeland’s J.D. Sylvanus (16-3) and Adam Cetnar of Wis.-Eau Claire
(14-4). Freshman Drew Larson (Willmar, Minn.) made his collegiate
debut at 149 pounds by defeating Tyler Baker of Coe, 7-4 and Clint
Harbord of Lakeland by a 14-4 major decision. Freshman John Vaith
(Hastings, Minn.) also earned his first win as a Johnnie by decision
over Lakeland’s Jonas Flok with a score of 10-5 at 157 pounds.
Junior Matt Schrupp (Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer) finished with a
3-0 record at 165. Schrupp recorded two major decision victories over
Wisconsin-Eau Claire’s Thad Betzold (10-2) and Wis.-Platteville’s Aaron
Konitzer (21-12). Sophomore Mogi Bataar (Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia)
finished with a 3-1 record after defeating Brett Olsen of
Wis.-Platteville and Matt Sisbach of Wis.-Eau Claire by technical
falls, 21-5 and 20-4, respectively.
MSU-Mankato dual postponed
The Johnnies’ dual with nationally-ranked Minnesota State-Mankato
originally scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 14 was postponed. No makeup
date has been set. SJU will feature a more head-to-head style of
competition this season, as the number of dual competitions will double
from 13 to nearly 30 this season. Other home events include the annual
Terry Haws Duals Dec. 15, the North Country Tournament Feb. 9 and the
NCAA Great Lakes Regional Feb. 23. The Johnnies also host St. Olaf
(Jan. 18) and Augsburg (Jan. 22) for duals this season.
