St. Cloud, Minn. -- Matt Benson of Chokio, Minn. has signed a national letter of intent to attend St. Cloud State University and wrestle for the Huskies, head coach Steve Costanzo announced today.
Benson is a 2007 state wrestling champion from
Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley/Chokio-Alberta High School. Last
season, Benson compiled an overall record of 31-2 en route to claiming
his first state title and his team's first ever individual state
championship in wrestling.
Benson went 37-2 as a sophomore and placed 3rd at the 2006 state
tournament. In addition, he qualified for the state tournament as
a freshman in 2005. Currently, he has an overall record of 115-21
and is ranked #22 in the country by Wrestling USA Magazine.
“Matt (Benson) is an excellent wrestler with fantastic scrambling
ability,” said Costanzo. “Matt will make a great addition to our lower
weights and give depth to our 125-pound weight class.”
Benson is the son of Rick and Rashelle Benson of Chokio.
St. Cloud State University is an NCAA Division II affiliate, and the
Huskies will begin competition in the always rugged Northern Sun
Intercollegiate Conference in 2008-09. Founded in 1869, St. Cloud
State University enrolls over 16,000 students and its campus is located
in the city of St. Cloud, Minn. - approximately one hour northwest of
Minneapolis-St. Paul.
