SJU’s young power shows
The majority of the Saint John’s varsity wrestling team traveled to
Minneapolis on Saturday, Nov. 17 to compete in the 2007 Auggie Open.
The Johnnies were supported by a host of young talent this past weekend
as four of the six Johnnies who placed were wrestlers in their first
season at SJU. At 149 pounds, freshman Drew Larson (right; Willmar,
Minn.) won his bracket by defeating Ben Knight of Morningside College,
Iowa 8-2. Freshman James Carlson (Royalton, Minn.) finished second at
184, falling to Josh Hall of Itasca Community College, 7-5 in the
finals. Freshman Dustin Baxter (Fairbanks, Alaska/West Valley)
accumulated a 4-1 record this weekend. Baxter wrestled at 184 and took
fifth in his bracket. Freshman Dustin Raygor (left; St. Croix Falls,
Minn.) left the Open with a record of 4-1 and a fifth-place finish in
the 165-pound bracket, while sophomore Jacob Evenson (Burnsville,
Minn./Apple Valley) took fourth in the 197-pound bracket. Sophomore
Mogi Baatar (Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia) went 3-1 overall with his lone loss
being a 3-1 loss to Chris Heilman of Cornell, Iowa, who finished fourth
in the nation last season. Junior Matt Schrupp (Watertown,
Minn./Watertown-Mayer) recorded a seventh-place finish in the 165-pound
class.
