Wilkes Captures Title At 2007 Husky Open:
With many regulars out for the 37th annual Husky Open, SCSU
still made the most of its Saturday afternoon. Nine Huskies finished in
the top six of their respective brackets, including a championship
effort from senior Nick Wilkes (Onamia) at 197 lbs. to lead SCSU to a
successful showing in the Husky Open. Multiple wrestlers bounced back
in the wrestleback rounds to claim place-winning performances. Tom
Anderson (Belview) went 7-1 on the day to capture third place after
losing to the eventual champion at 165 lbs. Brad Padgett (Buckley,
Wash.) won his last six matches after falling in his first to take
third place honors at 184 lbs. Gabe Suarez (Las Vegas, Nev.) made sure
he stayed out of the losers bracket by reaching the championship round
of the 141 lbs. division. Suarez nearly gave SCSU its second title, but
fell in overtime to Minnesota State’s Travis Elg. Rounding out the rest
of the Husky placers were Nick Wasche (Cedar / 5th at 133 lbs.), Jake
Horn (Ephrata, Wash. / 5th at 141 lbs.), Grant Johnson (Cold Spring /
6th at 149 lbs.), Derek Skala (Owatonna / 5th at 174 lbs.) and Chris
Schiewe (Chicago, Ill. / 3rd at 285 lbs.)
Huskies Ranked 20th In DII Poll:
The St. Cloud State University wrestling team was ranked 20th in the
latest NCAA Division II national poll. The Huskies received eight
points in the poll, marking first time this season that SCSU has been
ranked among the nation’s top 20 Division II wrestling teams. Brad
Padgett of SCSU was ranked sixth in the nation in the 184-pound weight
division in the same poll.
On Deck - Terry Haws Duals at SCSU:
The Huskies will head to Collegeville on Saturday to take part in the
Terry Haws Duals at St. John’s University. It will be the last action
for the Huskies as they will have nearly three weeks off from
competition for the holidays.
