Mavericks go 5-0 at the First Annual Newberry Duals, Makovsky reaches 200th Career Win Milestone
The Minnesota State wrestling
squad went 5-0 at the First Annual Newberry Duals today while
delivering head coach Jim Makovsky his 200th career victory along the
way. The Mavericks defeated King College 44-3, #9 Newberry College
22-16, Carson-Newman College 33-7, #10 Ashland University 29-12 and
Anderson University 44-4. The Mavericks are currently 6-0 in the
2007-08 season.
Makovsky reached the milestone victory in the Mavericks win over #10
Ashland University. His career record now stands at 201-83-4 (.70
win-loss %) with a 176-64-2 (.73 win-loss %) record as head coach of
the Mavericks. Makovsky is in his 20th season as a collegiate wrestling
coach as he took over the leadership position for the Mavericks in
1993-94 season after graduating in 1989 and coaching his alma mater,
Valley City State University, to a 25-19-2 record.
Since taking over the MSU wrestling program in 1993-94, Makovsky’s
teams have finished in the top eight ten times at the NCAA tournament
while coaching seven national champions in his career and sixty-two
All-Americans, including two-time heavyweight national champion Troy
Kenning, three-time All-American and national champ Troy Szydel and
four-time All-American and national champion Matt Petsinger, along with
sixty-six NWCA national All-Academic selections.
Since the beginning of the 2004 season, the Mavericks have compiled a
52-8 dual meet record, won eleven consecutive duals and have won
seventeen of their last eighteen duals.
Mavericks on Holiday Break
The Mavericks will head home for the holidays and return to campus after the holiday season.
Next competition - #8 Western State (CO) College and NWCA National Duals
The Mavericks next action will come in 2008 as they are off until Jan.
9, when they will host #8 Western State University in the Taylor Center
with a 7 p.m. start time.
Following the Western State dual, the Mavericks will travel to Cedar
Falls, Iowa to participate in the NWCA National Dual Meet Championships
on January 12-13th.

Rhoten Keeps Creeping Up All-Time Wins List
Senior Jason Rhoten, three-time NCAA II All-American, is closing in on
the Minnesota State University career win record held by Jack
Eustice. Jack was a four-time NCAA II All-American and National
Champion and tallied 126 career wins. Jason currently has a
114-26 record.
North Central Conference Wrestler of the Week Honors
Jason Rhoten was named the NCC wrestler of the week on December
18th. This marks the second time this season that Jason has
received this honor. Jason is currently 18-2 this season with
wins of over four nationally ranked opponents.
Brady Wilson was also named NCC wrestler of the week on December 11th and is currently 18-2 this season.
Abbott Off To Good Start
Tommy Abbott, a 149 pound freshman from Wilmington, Delaware, ran his
record to 13-1 by going 5-0 at the Newberry Duals. During the
Newberry University dual, Abbott defeated Latra Colick who is currently
ranked fourth nationally. Abbott’s lone loss this season came at the
Husky Open when he was defeated by Willy Holst of Augsburg College.
Holst is currently ranked #2 in the latest NCAA III poll.
NCAA II Rankings
The Mavericks are currently ranked #2 in the latest NCAA II National
coaches poll and have six wrestlers ranked in the top eight.
