Indianapolis, Ind. - The St. Cloud State University wrestling team
started the 2008 portion of the schedule with three, top-three finishes
for 9th place out of 21 schools at the Midwest Wrestling Classic on
Jan. 5, in Indianpolis.
Derek Skala led all Husky wrestlers with a second place finish in the
174-pound division. Skala won his first three matches by decision to
reach the final, but fell to Adams State's Evan Copeland. Gabe Suarez
was one of two Huskies to record a third place showing. After falling
in his semi-final match, Suarez recorded a tight, 3-1 decision over
Newberry's Tony Washington for his fifth win of the tourney, and third
place honors at 141 lbs.
At 185-pounds, Brad Padgett gained the other third place points by
going 5-1 on the tournament. Padgett lost his first match of the day to
the #1 ranked wrestler in the country in Jeremy Deaguero, falling 14-2.
Padgett rebounded to win two matches including a 10-7 decision over
Lucas Haag of Wisconsin-Parkside in the third place match.
At 125-pounds, Westy Hanson lost his only two matches of the day,
falling by a 8-4 decision to Steve Austin of Mount St. Joseph in the
seventh place match.
At 133-pounds, Josh Williams gained a first round bye and then charted
a 14-3 win over Dan Mandara of Ashland. Williams then
lost a match in the second round on a forfeit.
At 149-pounds, Chad Kubasch lost in his first round match. At
157-pounds, John Sundgren lost his first round match. Kubasch also lost
in the wrestlebacks by a 3-2 score to Dustin Baynes of Limestone.
Sundgren lost his wrestleback match to Gavin Nelson of Augstana by a
9-4 score. Tom Anderson won his first match of the day at 165, and then
dropped a narrow 6-5 decision to Tony Bradberry of Ashland in the
wrestlebacks. Anderson went on to post a 3-1 win over Justin Shannon of
Findlay to gain seventh place honors. Erik Rogness lost his first two
matches for the Huskies at 197-pounds, while heavyweight Chris Schiewe
ended the Classic with a 2-2 mark.
The Huskies will return to dual meet action Thursday when they head to
Aberdeen, S.D. to face Northern State. Action is slated to start at
7:00 p.m.
