Huskies win two duals; off to best start in 48 years:
The Husky Wrestling team
won its two matches this past week to remain a perfect 5-0 (The dual
victory over Ridgewater does not count on SCSU’s record because of
RCC’s junior college status.) in duals for the 2007-08 season. In the
last four duals, the Huskies dropped just five of the 50 possible
matches en route to a gaudy 151-15 difference in team points in the
last two wins. Chris Schiewe (Chicago, Ill.) finished off both matches
by pinning his two opponents this past week.
The perfect Husky start is the best start in duals by an SCSU wrestling
team since the 1959-60 season when the Huskies finished 11-1-1.
Thursday’s 33-6 win over Northern State was the second consecutive over
the Wolves, while the 42-0 victory in the first match with UW-Eau
Claire since 1994 was the first shutout of an opponent since 1983 when
SCSU defeated Minnesota-Morris 48-0.
Huskies continue to rise in national poll; Padgett remains in sixth:
SCSU continued to move up in the Wrestling Coaches Association Poll as
the Huskies jumped to 18th from 20th in the latest rankings. SCSU
junior Brad Padgett remained at sixth in the 184-pound division after
going 5-1 at the Midwest Classic two weeks ago.
On Tap: NCC Opener versus Augustana: The Huskies begin their
conference slate this Friday against Augustana. SCSU has not defeated
the Vikings since the 1999-2000 season when the Huskies enjoyed a 28-17
triumph in Halenbeck Hall. In last year’s dual against the Vikings, the
Huskies fell by a count of 27-12 in Sioux Falls, S.D.
