HUSKIES DEFEAT MOORHEAD
The St. Cloud State Wrestling
team came up with perhaps the biggest win of its season Friday over
seventh-ranked MSU-Moorhead. Trailing by eight points with three
matches remaining in the dual, the Huskies used a major decision from
No. 7 Brad Padgett (Buckley, Wash.), a 5-2 win by Nick Wilkes to cut
the Dragon lead to 15-14. At heavyweight, Chris Schiewe (Chicago, Ill.)
recorded a takedown in overtime to give him a 3-1 victory, and the
Huskies a 17-15 win. In Saturday’s match, things were decided much
earlier, as SCSU rode three forfeits and first period pins by Josh
Williams (Banks, Ore.), John Sundgren (Blaine) and Wilkes to a 50-0
shutout victory over SW Minnesota State. The victory was the second
shutout of the season and a season-high in dual meet points for the
Huskies. The total fell just four points shy of the team record for
most points in a dual.
HUSKIES RANKED 16th
At 184: In the latest Wrestling Coaches Association Poll, St. Cloud
State moved up two spots from 18th to 16th. Husky 184-pounder Brad
Padgett fell one spot to seventh after a loss to Augustana’s Beau
Severtson, the sixth ranked wrestler at that weight class.
On Tap: St. John’s, #9 Upper Iowa:
SCSU will spend its weekend in Halenbeck Hall as the Huskies will try
to take down a local rival and another ranked opponent in St. John’s
and No. 9 Upper Iowa. The Huskies handled the Johnnies earlier in the
year at the Terry Haws Duals by a 41- 3 count. Friday’s dual will also
be Prep Night for the Husky program as all area K-12 students are
invited to attend for just $1. Upper Iowa comes into the week with a
5-4 dual record and will travel to Northern State on Friday before
stopping at Halenbeck Hall on Sunday. The Peacocks won last year’s
match-up in Fayette, Iowa by a 31-10 count and also triumphed in 2006
by a 48-3 count. Sunday will also see the St. Cloud State seniors
honored in a pre-dual ceremony.
