John Sundgren was named to the First Team while Westy Hanson and Matt
Jackson earned Honorable Mentions to the NCAA Division II All-Academic
Wrestling Team it was announced this weekend at the Division II
Championships. As a team, the Huskies finished with the eighth best
overall mark with a 3.219 GPA.
Sundgren, a redshirt freshman from Blaine, is undecided on a major at
SCSU. Sundgren made his first appearance at the Division II National
Tournament this past weekend, making it to the event's second day,
earning an eighth place finish at 157 lbs. Sundgren finished the season
with a 24-10 record.
Hanson is a sophomore education major from Crookston, and was SCSU's
starter at 125 lbs. Hanson earned an Honorable Mention. Hanson finished
his season with a 16-17 record.
Jackson rounds out SCSU's individual honorees as he also earned an
Honorable Mention for his work in the classroom. Jackson, a junior from
Oakdale, is a Mathematics major. Jackson went 8-9 on the mat this
season, wrestling at 141 lbs.
As a team, the Huskies finished with the eighth best team GPA in the
Division II ranks, which is believed to be the highest ever for the
Husky grapplers. The lone North Region team to finish ahead of the
Huskies was MSU-Moorhead, who wound up in seventh with a 3.222 mark -
just .003 points ahead of SCSU.
Truman State took home the top mark with a 3.394 GPA, their fourth Academic Team Title since the 1996-97 season.
SCSU ended its season on Saturday with a 12th place finish at the
Division II National Championships. The Huskies sent seven individuals
to the tournament and ended the season with a 13-2 dual record under
second year head coach Steve Costanzo.
