Marshall, MN -- Southwest Minnesota State
wrestling coach Jesse Nelson announced that two of his wrestlers have
been named to the NCAA II All-Academic Team, an award honoring the top
wrestlers in the country in both academics and athletics. Senior Greg
Frank and sophomore C.D. Johnson both earned the honor for SMSU. To
qualify for the honor, wrestlers must have a minimum cumulative 3.00
grade point average, be in their second full year of school and be a
varsity member of their wrestling team.
The two Mustangs are the first to earn the honor since 2000 when Gus
Condezo and Brian Tesch were both named to the NCAA II All-Academic
Team. This year, 133 wrestlers around the country earned the honor.
Frank, a native of Foley, Minn., is a chemistry major with a GPA of
3.08. He posted a career-best record of 20-21 at 174 this winter and
0-1 at 184. Six of his wins were by fall and he also had four major
decision wins. He also placed in five opens.
Johnson, a native of LeRoy, Mich., is an elementary education major
with a science concentration and has a GPA of 3.09. He also saw much
improvement on the mat from last season, going 19-20 at 165 and 0-1 at
174. Johnson tied Frank for second on the team with six wins by fall,
while adding two wins by major decision and one by tech fall. He also
placed in three opens this winter.
