Newberry, S.C.--- The Minnesota State wrestling squad went 5-0 at the First Annual Newberry Duals today while delivering head coach Jim Makovsky his 200th career victory along the way. The Mavericks defeated King College 44-3, #9 Newberry College 22-16, Carson-Newman College 33-7, #10 Ashland University 29-12 and Anderson University 44-4.

His career record now stands at 201-83-4 (.70 win-loss %) with a 176-64-2 (.73 win-loss %) record as head coach of the Mavericks. Makovsky is in his 19th season as a collegiate wrestling coach as he took over the leadership position for the Mavericks in 1993-94 season after graduating in 1989 and coaching his alma mater, Valley City State University, to a 25-19-2 record.

Since taking over the MSU wrestling program in 1993-94, Makovsky’s teams have never finished lower than 17th at the NCAA tournament while coaching seven national champions in his career and 62 All-Americans, including two-time heavyweight national champion Troy Kenning, three-time All-American and national champ Troy Szydel and four-time All-American and national champion Matt Petsinger, along with 66 NWCA national All-Academic selections.

Three-time All-American Jason Rhoten (Mantorville, Minn.) led the Mavericks as he went 5-0 on the day wrestling in both the 157 and 165-pound weight classes.
