Bryce, Hoffman Lead Bison Past Rival Jackrabbits 35-10

January 23, 2008

FARGO, ND -- Falls by junior Jacob Bryce (197) and senior Eric Hoffman (125) helped lead North Dakota State to a 35-10 victory over South Dakota State on Wednesday, Jan. 23, at the Bison Sports Arena. It was the first Western Wrestling Conference dual meet for NDSU, which improves to 7-7 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

The Jackrabbits (0-6, 0-3 WWC) jumped out to an early 10-0 lead on the Bison, thanks to a major decision by NCAA qualifier Ryan Meyer (165), a 4-2 decision by Justin Retallic (174) and a 7-5 sudden victory at 184 by Tyler Sorenson. But those would be all the points SDSU could muster on the evening.

Bryce got North Dakota State going with a pin on Jeremy Swier at the 4:06 mark, and a forfeit at the heavyweight class put the Bison on top 12-10. From there, it was all NDSU as Hoffman recorded a fall on Alan Marvin at 125, while a reversal with two seconds remaining in the second tiebreaker session gave senior Eric Sanders a 5-4 victory over Derek Pirner and seemed to be the sealing win for the Bison.

Junior Gabriel Mooney recorded a decision at 141 while Andrey Patselov seemed as though he was about to register a technical fall on the Jacks’ Marc Wermersen before Wermersen withdrew with an injury. Junior Adam Aho finished out the night in grand style for North Dakota State with an 18-2 technical fall at the end of the first period to give the Bison the 35-10 advantage. NDSU is now unbeaten in its last 12 meetings with South Dakota State and improves to 33-17-1 all time against the Jackrabbits.

Up next for North Dakota State is a pair of conference road games in the Rocky Mountains. The Bison travel to Greeley, Colo., to face Northern Colorado on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 3 p.m. local time. It will be the second meeting of the year with the Bears, as NDSU recorded a 23-16 victory over UNC at the Northern Quad Duals on Nov. 24. North Dakota State then travels to Orem, Utah, for a conference dual with Utah Valley on Monday, Jan. 28. That meet is scheduled for 8 p.m. Central time.
