Bison Fall to Northern Colorado 21-18

January 26, 2008

GREELEY, Colo. - North Dakota State began strong against Western Wrestling Conference Northern Colorado, but the Bears rallied late to hand the Bison its first conference loss 21-18 on Saturday, Jan. 26.  NDSU drops to 7-8 overall and 1-1 in WWC action.

Redshirt freshman Kenny Moenkedick got the Bison off to a quick start with a pin on Ed Matthews with just under a minute remaining in the first period, while a decision by junior Jacob Bryce extended the NDSU lead to 9-0 early.

Northern Colorado (4-5, 2-1 WWC) cut the gap to 9-8 following a technical fall at the heavyweight and 5-3 decision at 125, but decisions by senior Eric Sanders (133) and junior Gabriel Mooney (141) would give the Bison a 15-8 advantage.  Junior Adam Aho (157) also recorded a decision at 157, giving NDSU an 18-11 lead with two weight classes to go.

But the Bears came up big when they needed to, recording a fall at 165 and a major decision in the final class of the afternoon to give UNC the 21-18 victory.  The win was only the second for Northern Colorado coach Jack Maughan against his father Bucky, as he improved to 2-19-1 all-time against the Bison.  It also snapped a three-match winning streak against the Bears, as NDSU is now 27-3-1 all-time against Northern Colorado.

North Dakota State now travels to Orem, Utah, for another conference showdown against Utah Valley (5-5, 1-0 WWC) on Monday, Jan. 28.  The meet against the Wolverines is scheduled for an 8 p.m. start in Fargo.
