Hoffman, Mooney Lead North Dakota State Past Wyoming 29-10
February 1, 2008
FARGO, N.D. -- A fall by senior Eric Hoffman and a technical fall by junior Gabriel Mooney set the tone early for North Dakota State
as the Bison defeat Western Wrestling Conference opponent Wyoming 29-10
on Friday, Feb. 1, at the Bison Sports Arena. With the victory
NDSU improves to 9-8 overall and 3-1 in conference play this season,
moving it into sole possession of third place in the conference
standings.
Hoffman opened the meet strong for North Dakota State at 125 with a pin
at the 2:53 mark against Cody Grant, followed up with senior Eric
Sanders dueled returning NCAA qualifier Cory VomBaur to a 1-0
decision. Mooney then registered a 15-0 technical fall midway
through the second period on Brandon Gifford to put NDSU on top
comfortably 14-0.
Wyoming (1-7, 0-2 WWC) closed the gap to 14-3 with a decision at 149
before junior Adam Aho took a 4-2 decision against Dane Fuhrman at 157
for his team-leading 22nd victory of the season. The Cowboys’
Eric Coxbill took a major decision at 165, which was followed by
freshman Shannon Fettig earning the first dual victory of his Bison
career with a 4-2 decision over Kyle Morrow. Redshirt freshman
Kenny Moenkedick won a 6-4 decision at 184 while Wyoming forfeited the
197 class to put the Bison on top 29-7. The Cowboys’ Jason Still
took a decision in the heavyweight class to close out the night on a
high note for Wyoming, but it wasn’t enough as NDSU improves to 4-4
all-time against the Cowboys and have won four of the last five
meetings.
North Dakota State will be off the mats for a couple of weeks before
taking on Air Force and Portland State in the final two home dual meets
of the season. The Bison will wrestle the Falcons on Friday, Feb.
15, at 7:30 p.m. and will then take on the Vikings on Saturday, Feb.
16, with an 8 p.m. start time.
