Huskies Win Thriller over No. 7 MSU-Moorhead 17-15

Moorhead, Minn. - In a match-up of two nationally ranked programs, it
was only fitting the outcome would be decided in the last match. Saint Cloud State's
Chris Schiewe (Chicago) recorded a 3-1, OT decision in the dual's final
bout to lead the No. 16 Huskies over No. 7 MSU-Moorhead 17-15, Friday
evening at Alex Nemzek Hall.
In a battle that featured three overtime matches and eight bouts
decided by four points or less, SCSU stole the last three matches to
erase an eight point deficit and record the upset victory.
MSU-Moorhead used decisions from Joe Werner and Kelly Janke at 125 and
133 lbs. to jump out to the early 6-0 lead. Gabe Suarez (Las Vegas,
Nev.) then won his seventh straight match via a 15-6 major decision to
cut the Dragon lead to 6-4.
Derek Bomstad for MSU and SCSU's John Sundgren (Coon Rapids) then both
traded decisions to keep the dual a two point affair half-way through.
The dual intensified as the next two matches went to overtime. Tom
Anderson (Belview) and Derek Skala (Owatonna) both lost at 165 and 174
respectively to set the stage for the Husky rally.
Trailing 15-7, seventh ranked Brad Padgett (Buckley, Wash.) pushed the
Huskies to within four via a 17-5 major decision over Dan LeDuc. Nick
Wilkes (Onamia) then kept the Huskies alive with a 5-2 win at 197 lbs,
setting up Schiewe's heroics.
With the win the Huskies move to 9-1 on the season, while the loss drops the Dragons to 10-6.
SCSU will look to build off its momentum Saturday, when they host
Southwest Minnesota State, in a non-conference dual at Halenbeck Hall.
Start time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
