The Augustana wrestling team came up short in sevral close matches as Dana defeated Augustana 31-10 Friday night at the Elmen Center.
Dana's experienced lineup which featured 7 seniors proved to be too much for Augie's young lineup that featured 7 freshmen.
Augustana picked up 2 wins in the dual. First, Mike Long used 6
takedowns and a 3-point near fall to record a 17-8 major decision over
Dana's Marcos Martinez.
Then at 184 pounds, Augustana's Beau Severtson, ranked sixth in
Division II, dominated Dana's Mark Lantosh. Severtson was leading 6-2
in the first period when Severtson was able to pin Lantosh with 15
seconds left in the period.
Augustana had several close calls. At 125 pounds, Al Meger was leading
Dana's Kevin Gray 5-3 with 1:27 left in the bout. Then, with 57 seconds
remaining Gray scored a takedown and was able to pin Meger with 39
seconds on the clock.
At 141 pounds, Augie's Jay Sherer and Dana's Adam Manz were scoreless
after 2 periods. Manz then scored an escape to start the third period
and was able to fight off numerous takedown attempts by Sherer. Manz
held on for the 2-0 decision after picking up a point for riding time.
At 157 pounds, Dan Pray of Dana scored a 5-2 decision over Augustana's
Gavin Nelson. Pray led 4-2 after 2 periods and chose the down position
to start the final period. Nelson tried his best to turn Pray, but to
no avail. Finally, with 3 seconds left, Pray escaped to secure the
victory.
But the biggest shocker of the night came at 197 pounds when Dana's
Ross Milan upset Augie's Ty Copsey, ranked 4th in Division II. Copsey
was leading 3-0 midway through the secnd period when Milan was able to
take Copsey down to his back and get the pin at the 4:06 mark.
Augustana will be off now until next Saturday, February 9, when they travel to the North Country Open in Collegeville, Minn.
