St. Cloud State Wrestling Rolls to 50-0 Win Over SMSU
February 2, 2008
St. Cloud, Minn. - The #16 St. Cloud State University wrestling
team (10-1) charted its second shutout of the season with a huge 50-0
victory over Southwest Minnesota State (0-6) on Feb. 2, at Halenbeck
Hall in St. Cloud, Minn.
The victory was SCSU's largest dual meet point total of the season, and
it marked the biggest point output for the Huskies since a 50-4 victory
over St. Olaf on Jan. 10, 2007. Of note, the 50 points was just
four points shy of current team record of 54 points in a dual match set
against Southwest Minnesota State in 1976-77.
The victory complete a weekend sweep for the Huskies, which started
with a close 17-15 win at Minnesota State, Moorhead on Feb. 1.
"I was happy to see us stayed focused and take care of business after a
very emotional win last night at Moorhead," SCSU coach Steve Costanzo
said. "We were able to not just win tonight, but we were able to
really dominate them...and that's is what we asked of our guys before
the match tonight."
The evening opened with a forfeit win at 125-pounds by Westy Hanson for
the Huskies. At 133-pounds, Josh Williams gained a pinfall at
2:39 over SMSU's Ed Reno. This was his third pin of the season
and it improved his record to 14-5.
At 141-pounds, Gabe Suarez pushed his team leading victory total to
26-3 with a 20-6 major decision over L.J. Franzoni of SMSU. At
149-pounds, Chad Kubasch also gained a forfeit win to make it 22-0.
The Huskies added their second pin of the evening with a fall at 2:33
by John Sundgren over SMSU's Logan McAlpin at 157-pounds.
Sundgren is now 16-5 on the season and he has six falls this season.
At 165-pounds, SCSU's Tom Anderson (23-12) charted a 9-1 major decison
for the Huskies over Luke Giese. At 174-pounds, Derek Skala
(23-6) charted a 7-2 win over SMSU's Greg Frank.
Brad Padgett, ranked seventh in the nation at 184-pounds, carded a big
14-7 win over SMSU's Tyler Johnson. Padgett is now 25-5.
At 197-pounds, SCSU's Nick Wilkes coined the Huskies third fall of the
evening with a pin at 2:59 against SMSU's Cody Chamblin. Wilkes
is now 17-4 this season. To complete the scoring, SCSU's Chris
Schiewe gained a forfeit win at heavyweight.
Next up for the Huskies will be a Feb. 8, home match against Stearns
County rival St. John's University. The match will begin at 7
p.m. in Halenbeck Hall.
